They are reporting the site back online.

However in the news story, they eluded to a denial-of-service attack, although I am tempted to believe the more likely story is that either:
    • someone hacked the site as a prank; or
    • one of the employees changed the wrong line of code.

Some people are reporting they can access them and there is some speculation it might be a DoS attack. In any case, the message seems to have been changed and indicates this is a tech problem.

Here's the message I just saw on the site:

"Hello, Canada! Technical issues are currently affecting access to craigslist Canada sites for many users. All hands are working to get this sorted out asap. Sorry for the inconvenience."

For a minute there, I thought this might have to do with all those escort ads.

Bill might be on to something when he suggests this might be a hack prank too.

Yeah, if they had been shut down by the government, it would have shown a legal notice instead of CL's Rules Violation page.

If it had been a DDOS attack, then people would never see the error page at all... The site would instead time out...

This has to be something orchestrated from the inside...

Unless someone hacked the DNS database to redirect to the Rules Violation page, except if that were the case, CL would never have been able to change the error message on the page you can see, without changing the information on that URL completely. LOL

And besides that, if it had something to do with the DNS database, it would be almost impossible to propagate that change country-wide.
