hi people

just want to ask a question as i am about to start a new blog and in process of writing a press release, i know this will cost me money to do the press release but i wanted to get the opinions of some experts out there, i want to get some good traffic to my blog, will a press release do that?

some positives and negatives about press releases would be great, and any other advice!

cheers

    • You need to think about what's distinctive about your blog and what the story is that you're releasing. A well written press release can be great for drawing traffic (at least temporarily) but you do have to have the unique selling point there to take best advantage of it.

The job of a press release is to persuade a journalist, or these days any publisher, to write a story about you. The most important part of that process is to make your story worth retelling. "A new blog" is not a story. It has to be special to get coverage. The better the story the more coverage you will get.

The quality of the story is vital and the most decisive factor. The quality of the release or the distribution options are secondary to the story. So what's your story?

    Hi Lazavas,

Press releases can be incredibly powerful, or you'll hear nothing but crickets. The real key is to find some way to tie in something that is newsworthy - something that an audience can relate to.

So many people are now using press releases to promote non-events that the pr sites are a bit glutted with useless ones and it is hard to find the true standouts.

If you have an event, something special or something newsworthy, go for it. A lot of people will pay $ to get their PR written, and then spend even more to broadcast it, but unless you have a hook in there, it's just normally not money well spent.

If you don't have something newsworthy, your efforts (and money) may be better spent writing solid content, submitting it to social bookmarking/networking sites and article marketing.

On the flip side, press releases can work by supplying you with good backlinks and you may see some organic results, but these will take time.

    Hope this helps!
    Cary
