Seomoz open site explorer provides metrics to analyze competitor backlinks data.

What makes it a great tool with these metrics - how does one benefit from these metrics when checking the backlinks from competitor ?

Before this tool existed only yahoo site explorer existed and everything was done manually in terms of once you got all the backlinks from your competitor you would then do manually what open site explorer helps automate.

So what is the steps I should take or other people that can not afford open site explorer to determine be doing for analyzing links from competitor is worth getting or not getting ...

There has to be a process that seos go through when reverse engineering a competitors backlinks I am sure they do not just get every link the competitor has since some will be bad links ?

    We are using Market Samurai. For a 1 time $97 you can get access to the first 1,000 links that are anchor text. Analyzing the links anchor text and PR can give you a real good idea of the type of seo work being done.

    It also analyzes the following items for the top 10 resulting websites for a given term:

    Domain age, PR, internal pages, backlink numbers, dmoz listed and also analyzes whether the keyword is in the meta tags. Great tool, they get their info from Majestic SEO.

    However, they are currently dealing with bugs and the anchor text and PR of links is not working. Before you buy, I would make sure that they plan on fixing this, I haven't checked yet.
