Why is Wikipedia so brilliant at SEO?

Hello Warriors,

Whenever I surf the net for any well known person or information, if wikipedia has it, it would, not only appear on the first page, but on top ONE of the first page almost 100% of the time.

My question is, why are they so good in SEO and what is it that they're are doing right to be this immensely successful with SEO?

    Wikipedia has set itself up as a leading authority..

    When you take into account the thousands of backlinks it receives, the many interlinking pages and strong SEO the site has on page. It's no doubt that it's so successful.

    It probably became an authority by the user edited content (and links), strong interlinking, and always linking out to other authority sites (many .edu and .gov). Now Google just knows Wikipedia gives quality results when people are searching for information.

    They've established themselves as an authority site. There are so many people who use them as sources so they've got plenty of links around.

    It's basically built for SEO - in the same way that if you Googled a single word, you'd likely get dictionary.com on the top of the page, Wiki is always relevant to most search phrases.
