I want to start this amazing site but I'm scared to death it will get hacked. I'm scared if I buy a template from the wrong designer it will be sketchy and they will mess with the code so they can get in. Or if that doesn't happen, someone online will eventually find their way onto my site and get in.

I have money to invest in this, but when it's gone, it's gone. I would hate to do a whole bunch of work only to watch someone steal from me or screw with my list and ruin everything.

I registered my domain with GoDaddy and did the highest protection I could choose, the private business registration. I have not put my site up yet, but I have my ghostwriting site up with Hostgator, so I will be putting the new site up with them too.

Anyone been hacked before? Do you know what I can do to protect myself? I heard Wordpress has security holes. Is this true?

Any advice would be fantastic.

Thanks.

Well I have never been hacked before *knocks wood*. I mean many people use wordpress, it should be fine. Godaddy is also something that is commonly used and well its good you choose to have an high security wall

I don't think you need to be worried.

To be honest with you, everything can be hacked..Sony got hacked twice lately.. I have been seeing alot sites getting hacked for some reason... dunno if there is an issue or no with the wordpress and Joomla

If you use SQL on your website I would suggest looking into some security solutions offered by hostgator or godaddy which will protect you from SQL injections.. try to keep it simple and backup everything everyday..if you are spending alot of money on it..

I've been hacked. It was a pain in the butt, but I learned a few things because of it.

    My suggestions are:

    • Be sure that your passwords can't be read in your code. (This is a beginners' mistake that I made early on.)
    • Change your passwords often.
    • Use passwords that can't be found in the dictionary.
    • Change your site's user name if you can (many hosts use the first few characters of your domain with maybe some digits appended. That makes it too easy for hackers.)
    • Do regular back ups for both your databases and your pages.

Usually get hacked every couple of years on average.. no big deal.

My host uses RAID disks and runs virus scans.

Every time the site has been hacked it's been fixed within a couple of hours.

I've been hacked a few times. Keep backups of your site. If you let fear stop you you'll get nowhere.

When I used to own a free web hosting service, a few people from France hacked one of my servers (the one with my primary domain) and changed my website all together. They left me their email address. I contacted them and they proposed to give me security services because they were able to get into my server (Interesting marketing approach, right?).

All of this happened because the month prior to the hacking I moved my website to a new server that had not been secured by the techs at the DataCenter.

Make sure the server you use is secure or if you have a web hosting account with a web hosting company, make sure you are using a reputable web hosting provider.

If you are using wordpress or other popular cms platforms, make sure you are always updating your cms platform to the latest version available. Wordpress is always coming out with new versions of their system to improve and combat hackers who keep finding loopholes in the system.

And finally, keep as many backups as you can! Backup everytime you make a change to your website and make sure you back it up to your computer or to another (hopefully more secure) server the hackers can not access. Do not backup your website to a directory in the same web hosting account

Been hacked at least 5 times. Different websites.

Most of the time they hack your FTP.

SO don't auto save passwords in your applications!
Make them really stupid hard passwords that you have to memorize as a pattern....using special characters, numbers and letter...CAPS and lower case.

      Don't be paranoid.

Add to the list: keep Wordpress, plugins and themes up to date. If you're scared about using a sketchy theme, use themes available from WordPress. They don't tolerate sketchy.

You should assume that you will get hacked, and prepare for it by using the tips others have shared. It might never happen to you, but if it does, you've only lost a little time recovering.

It's the nature of the business. Don't let it scare you.

Choose a good host, keep your software and scripts updated and do not, I repeat, do not use themes or plugins that are not from wordpress at first. Later on you will know which ones to use and not use.

I hear people who download a hot theme and use it then they lose their site. That is because the hot theme had code in it which benefits the person who offered it.

People get agrivated with me a lot because of their mistake. I am a web hosting provider and I make sure to always point out security flaws to my customers.

It is always important to choose a good host and software. I have had a great experience with wordpress and many wordpress designers and coders.

I would be happy to help.

    Thanks,
    Jonathan
