What do you do with 10,000 Opt In Emails?

My friend has 10k in fresh opt in emails. I don't know what they opted in for exactly. I have their name and email address. What is the best way to monetize this list? Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated.

As Paul said - unless you know which product/service/info they opted in for - the list is virtually useless. Maybe you can ask your friend.

      Yeah. We know.

I'm seriously considering asking Thomas to set up a "bad word" filter to change the phrase "Shireen here" to something like "Insert pointless artificial branding slogan of your choice."

It's not a good idea to recommend spamming here. And sending email to that list would, at least for the OP, constitute spamming.

If you don't know what they opted in for, how are you 100% sure they opted in for anything?

Find out that they are indeed opt-ins and then discover what for.

you need to know what the opt'd in for before you send them anythink.

for example if they opt'd in for golf products and you send them seo services you just going to get a high unsubscribe rate and NO SALES.

When you find out what they opt'd in for start by sending them free info for a week or so in that niche to build trust then hit them with an affiliate offer!

    Thanks

As many people have said before because you do not know what they have opted into you will need to start again at the begining or dump them.

I would sent them a one off message inviting them to subscribe to your marketing newletter or other information of general interest and have them click on a link to your autoresponder ONLY if they are interested

I always advise against buying lists or accepting gifts becuase they are useally worthless and often contain outdated details which means emails cannot be delivered

If it's your friends list, then you can do a JV with him.

Getting the list from your friend without his knowledge and
sending to them yourself is no good but
asking your friend to mail for you and recommend what you have
in exchange for a percentage in income is called JV.

Just make sure that he preps up the list first because even if people
signed-up to his offers, if it's a long time already some might still
    get annoyed

And make sure he is sending in your behalf. If you do it yourself, like what has
been said clearly, that's called ...........You know..

C'mon, you want to send an email to a list you don't know anything... how will introduce yourself to the list. if I am among the list and I receive a mail from you, which i don't know how you got my email, I will just opt-out. You need to ask your friend how and what purpose did the members opt-in for, before you can send any email to them. Hope this help...

I really appreciate your feedback. I got more info on the list. My friend mentioned to me that he paid for an opt in email list from a cpa lead gen offer from an affiliate network. You know the cpa offers that tell the user they can win a "free iphone", all they need to do is submit their name, phone, etc? That is what they opted in for. Knowing this info, how can you monetize this type of list?

      Quick answer...you can't.

      You'll simply waste time.

I know you'll ignore all the advice you've been given
so I guess you'll just have to learn the hard way.

No offense but what you guys are saying after my previous comment doesn't make any sense. Affiliate marketers push lots of traffic to these $1-$2 email lead gen offers. I pushed traffic to them and I'm sure some of you have also pushed traffic to these email lead gen offers. Check out this URL to see an example of this lead gen offer I'm talking about:
    Code:
    http://newbieadvisor.com/images/cpa-offer.jpg
as you can see from the screen shot, the user is simply entering their zip code, next they will be prompted for name, etc. The companies that are collecting these emails are sending all kinds of crap to these lists, and its perfectly legal because the user opted in! Most don't even read the fine print! The fine print states that if you opt into one of these lists, you information can be sold AND used by a 3rd party. So If my friend purchases these leads and he emails them and provides an "unsubscribe" he is not spamming them. My initial question is how can this list be monetized? I think the idea regarding providing valuable content was a good idea, does anyone else have any value to contribute to this post?

ok, I get it. You know where your friend got the list and it is "legal" per you based on what the subscribers signed up for that you can now email them something.

Well, most people have spam filters and if the email comes to them from someone other than who they ok'd in their address book, they will probably never see the email anyway. So you may re-consider if you want to waste your time on this.

However, if you do have the "legal" right to send an email to these people and realize they do not know you and did not directly opt in to whatever you will be sending them, I would start out with something in the subject line to remind them from whince this came.

For example, if they opted in to get the Iphone, then say,

Another Offer From Your Free IPhone Submission

At least, this way there is the chance they may remember that they did this and then open the email.

Then at the beginning of the email in small type of a subhead that they signed up for the Free Iphone.

      Then start off with

Here is another great offer for you
      and proceed with an offer.

I would offer them something along the same lines
of what they already signed up for but
make it your own thing so that you can
get these people on your list.

It's a little unclear who has the list. If it's your friend, then he must also know what kind of list it is. And it's him who will decide what to do with it. You may somehow know the emails and names, but the list is his. Knowing the addresses is nothig - you can run a spider that collects thousands and thousands of emails a day, that doesn't mean you have a list any more than collecting images from Google would allow you to start selling them.

It is possible that these people have indeed allowed third party offers. Only, then you should have an agreement with that first party who signed them and sold the list to you. In that case, should there be any legal complications, they will show the conditions that person agreed to and everything is settled. But if you even don't know anything about the list, I assume that's not so. It's not very wise to use it through normal marketing channels, as it's a clear way of getting into trouble.

I realize you want to make this work somehow, but people are giving you advice based on experience and many of those here have tons of it, good and bad. Don't discount that insight. No one ever opts in to have their name sold over and over again. There's legal and there's best practice. Legal keeps you out of jail and best practice keeps you in business.

    Regards,
    Jim

And, if they have opted in to win a free iphone... I then promote applications etc. on my very first email. and make a new list out of it.

I don't have much knowledge in this but .. still .. I have seen the mobile related ebooks on clickbank.

      Hi

The iPhone is only the incentive to get their info.

Since they aren't Opting in for anything other than a chance to win the iPhone, the idea of these types of CPA offers is usually simply to get contact and demographic information for a list.

That's why the pay-outs are so low. They are getting poorly targeted leads with demographic information (survey) attached.

You use the demographic information to then sub-divide the list into potential markets to target.

How detailed the demographic information is will help you be more targeted for cold offers.

Like facebook advertising, you would send offers targeted to your most likely demographic.

These lists number in the millions and are usually owned by marketing companies who sell off targeted segments based on the customer's demographic needs.

However, in your case you know ONE THING all these leads have in common! They gave up their personal information to a CPA offer for a chance to win an iPhone.

I would just keep sending free CPA offers to the list.

"Want a new Kindle Fire for free? Complete this simple survey"

"Get a FREE Visa gift card in time for Christmas."

"1 in 10 WIN!! Simple survey!"

      etc...

      Mahlon

      PS/EDIT:

This may seem like spam but if these are emails gathered from CPA offers like this they will get tons of emails from their information being sold to companies and marketers. As the OP said it is "legal".

Could you just speak your friend and ask him
why did they optin to his website.

He didn't buy the list....He built it right?

Right now I am new but if I put myself in your situation then I must do one thing...

Let's suppose I don't know anything about the list.

      1. I must choose a topic/niche related to both men and women.
for example: magic, astronomy, astrology, tarot, millionaire mind set etc.

      2. Then I make a great, very very great, free report on that topic.

      3. Promote that free report with single email to all of them and make a new list with it...

      4. After that I send quality content to that new list and monetize it.

In this way, I convert the (unknown) list according to my choice... I hope if I have tried this then I must have got 500 true emails by following this way ..

Now I don't know how much it's effective. I am new in this internet marketing. Seniors know well and better... But if I were you... I must do this... and then keep on improving myself and list.

Don't send anything to them unless you know what they opted in for. Once you know this you send them targeted and related products...BUT....DO NOT send a product to them to buy with every email. Build a relationship with them...find them free stuff that would interested them...Build a relationship from you that is valuable and they will purchase products through your links when you send them to them once in a while...

The issue I see with it is that even if you can email them because somewhere in the small print when they opted in for a free iPad, they were giving permission to be emailed by partners, from the point of view of the subscriber, you're still sending them unsolicited email. They didn't specifically opt in to receive offers from you.

I've opted into stuff in the past and gotten offers from partner businesses and it's usually generic stuff like PC repair, credit check, gift certificates from various chain restaurants or department stores, etc.

I've never actually signed up or bought anything from these emails though. Not only do I not have an interest in the stuff they're promoting (untargeted), but there's also the issue of even if I recognize the brand sending the offer, I don't know if the offer's really from Wal-Mart or if it's some phisher/scammer trying to get info from me, so I don't trust them.

If these big companies are using this as a marketing method then presumably they're making money from it, but I'd guess that it works for them due to sheer volume of names they can contact, even if their conversion rate is extremely low due to the unsolicited nature of the contact.

Doesn't answer your question, but just sharing my experience as someone on the receiving end of these partner offers. Put yourself in your prospects' shoes. If some company you didn't opt in to receive information from emailed you out of the blue, what would that email need to say in order to get your attention, let alone get you to buy something?

Write a week of free, short useful eBooks or emails in whatever niche they're in and get them to know your name.

Write another week of free, short useful eBooks or emails in that same niche and put a link at the bottom to a paid product.

For your third week, try something that will let them get to know you even better for free (an exclusive seminar perhaps).

Repeat program indefinitely and make money every 3 weeks.

Do research on what they opted in for first though!! Also, keep in mind that you'll need to watch the attrition rate, too!
