Thinking of Making Quick Cash Selling Your Stuff on Ebay? Think Again

I don't spend a lot of time selling my stuff on ebay, I sell when I get the itch to clear out things I don't need or use anymore.

It has probably been a couple months before I last sold anything, but recently my son wanted to earn some extra money for Christmas. So I told him we could sell is old video games on ebay.

He sold one. Great huh? Not really. Here I find out we will no longer get paid for the purchases right away like it was the last time I sold something on ebay. You will only get paid after the person receives the product. Ebay estimates that he will get paid on December 26th, 21 days after he sold his game.

There are ways to get payment quicker such as paying for shipping through ebay, which is overpriced, and also using shipping confirmation, but you still have to wait until it is delivered.

So, I'll have to pay shipping costs out of pocket before even getting money for the purchase of the game, and the money to cover the shipping. It isn't much, but I still shouldn't have to do it this way.

This applies to anyway who they consider "high risk"

Payments from your buyers will generally be available immediately:
  • It's been more than 90 days since your first successful sale and
  • You've had more than 25 sales transactions and
  • You've had more than $250 in total sales
  • Your seller performance rating is "standard" or above.
I have call them because I don't think any of the above applies to me.

So basically this is just letting anyone that is new to ebay or hasn't sold a lot, ebay is not the place to go if you are looking to make some quick money off your used stuff.

Ebay is great as a buyer, but as a seller I think not.

With fraud so rampant on sites like Ebay and Amazon, it's no surprise that their guidelines are becoming tougher and tougher even for the occasional seller. It's sad, but the new reality.

Ouch, but yeah. They've got to crack down on the scammers.

Remember when it used to be soooo easy to make money with email because there were no spam filters? Would you REALLY want those spam filters to go away today?

My first time ever selling something on ebay for a ($1.29 profit drop shipping) was crazy. I had to wait like 21 days or something to get paid $1.29. But needless to say they do that so people wont scam scam scam on there. Once you break the security thresh hold its a lot better.

I understand the reason for doing this, but they are definitely going to drive away sellers that's for sure.

    Wow..

And I thought they were bad for sellers like 2 years ago.. haha

I quit selling on there long ago. I've thought about selling some stuff I dont use on there anymore in the future, but I doubt I will after reading this.

Yeah, I'm pretty much not going to bother sell with them any more after this. I've been selling on and off there quite sometime, my seller rating is 100%, and I've sold hundreds of dollars worth of stuff. They made enough off me with their fees, yet they still want to withhold payment on me.

It not that big of deal for me since I don't use them that much, but if someone is just trying to make some money so the lights aren't shut off, selling on ebay isn't going to help you in the short term.

I had to pull the plug on my Ebay business a couple of years back due to it getting constantly harder.

...Doesn't look like it's getting any better either.

I sold some stuff this Xmas on eBay, like I did last year, though I don't sell anywhere near as much on there as I used to. Last year I had one buyer from Australia, and the item took 10 weeks to reach her!

Because of that, when this new "wait for payment till the buyer receives the item" rule came out this year and I expected it to apply to me, I limited my auctions to North American buyers only. Lo and behold, all the paypal payments came through to me instantly - no holds. So I could have had more bidders and higher prices

That stinks. It would have been nice if you knew beforehand whether or not they were going to hold payment. I would not have had told my son we could sell his games on ebay had I known that they were going to withhold payment. The change must be something recent, since I sold items and got payments instantly within a couple months ago.

ebay has turned into nothing more that a giant on-line wallmart for cheap chinese goods with fake CE and ISO certs.

I must admit that I use them for software that I sell, but just for marketing purposes.. the price for the software on my website is 1/3 cheaper (with coupon) which drives the ebay customer to my website to make the purchase! The 2.00 it costs me every month to advertise my product on ebay seems like a good deal. )

As far as selling goods, why not try Amazon? You dont pay fees unless something sells. Sales can be very quick with people looking for the goods. You can see at a glance what to price your item at (check what others are selling theirs for) And it is so easy to list your item.

You do have to wait till payout time but with the ease of use it may be a viable option.

That's ridiculous. You have to take financial risk to prove yourself?

PayPal fees are an insurance for Ebay. They should take the risk to have you as a new customer / trader.

I stopped selling things on eBay years ago too when they made it impossible for sellers to leave negative feedback for bad buyers.

I'm not even that surprised they are now withholding funds for almost one month after the sale takes place. It is good that they are trying to make things harder for all of the scammers, but legitimate sellers cannot afford to gamble with their property. Now you have to pay out of pocket to ship an item and hope the buyer doesn't try to scam you by claiming the item wasn't received or wasn't as described...

This looks to me to be in line with the general PayPal attitude of keeping people's money as long as possible. As has been posted many times on the WF, many people have experienced that when they have a lot of money going into PayPal, PayPal then blocks their account for 6 months or more, preventing them getting any access to their money.

They are doing this in other ways too. Right now, a payment I've recieved is "on hold" for no reason whatever, I've contacted the buyer and he has given them full details that the payment should be released to me, yet they deny having recieved anything from him, and just say they might get around to reviewing that hold within 30 days, maybe.

If you think about it, that means PayPal can invest that money, knowing that they don't have to give it back for that period. Since they are doing that to large numbers of people in various ways it is one way they can make more profit, by investing all the money they keep for a while before they let the person who owns that money actually get it.

I wonder how many millions of people they are doing this to right now, and how many billions of our money they are making interest from, by refusing to give it to us when they should.

Let's hope someone comes up with a much more honest system than PayPal, and quick. I read a rumor here that Visa is in the process of making an online payment system? Hope that's more professional and more honest than PayPal.

      Chris

I used Ebay for the first time in October to sell some vintage items, I had the worst experience and will probably not use Ebay again.

They delay paying you until your item is delivered to the seller, I can understand that.
What I don't understand it that this policy is not clearly stated in an obvious manner, they sneak it into their long TOS, which they know no one reads.

This policy should be prominently displayed and it isn't. They lost me as a user.

Maybe now all these WSOs which include Ebay as a fast way to make money will have to find some other filler for their content.

This is called "The Wall." The Wall in many peoples opinion, is what separates small time sellers, scammers, and business builders. It's just unfortunate that small time sellers are on the same side of the wall as scammers. This is really just theory, it's really just a tactic used by PayPal to hold onto funds for as long as possible.

However, the Wall theory makes sense. eBay no longer wants people to come online and act as if eBays market place is some kind of flea market to dump their old products on. eBay wants to be like Amazon and that means keeping around long term sellers and pushing smaller sellers away. eBay wants high value businesses on there selling at cut throat prices continually.

Ebay is good because the market is there, but it is DEFINATELY getting harder, and you have to respect it like a real business by dominating your position, and standing out, otherwize competion is just rampant.

I have been an Amazon seller for about 6 years. I sold some on eBay and did not care much for it at all. eBay just has so many fees and I found selling on that platform to be a huge hassle. Selling on Amazon is a lot more structured. I'm an FBA merchant on Amazon. I just ship my products to Amazon and I'm done - no fulfillment. I don't even have to come out of pocket with postage - it's all handled by Amazon. And I make more money as an FBA merchant than when I sold as an Amazon marketplace merchant. For anyone selling anything other than collectibles or really unique items, I recommend Amazon over eBay.

Sorry for the long-winded post but this thread made me want to tell my recent horror story. If if you got a minute or two, humor me.

I've been an ebay top-rated powerseller for years, I had (still have, actually - just haven't gotten around to canceling yet) an ebay storefront and recently ran into the same problem. I have sold on ebay since 2003, but was never really serious about it, (too busy affiliate marketing and building adsense sites) until around 2007 when I got sick of "internet marketing" and decided to get serious about ebay.

I did great for nearly 4 years until I started using a certain drop-shipper (I'll leave them nameless) and they screwed up a few orders, getting me my first negative feedback in over 1300 sales and 4 opened cases because of faulty merchandise and/or order mixups. I thought I had contained the problem, I canceled the listings asap and took care of the refunds, that's really all I could do in that situation.

A week later I get a message from ebay saying that I no longer qualified as a top-rated seller because of the negative and 4 open cases in 90 days I guess. I then log in to Paypal to begin filling orders and find that all of the money for the last 24 hrs in sales (roughly 8 items) is being held until I "establish a good standing on ebay". The kicker is, all 8 of these items are drop-ship products - meaning I have to pay out of my own pocket to purchase and ship these items to the customer, and wait until confirmation of delivery before I ever see a dime of this money.

In one week I ended up having to cancel the listings for every drop-ship item in my store (some that were best-selling products) and ended up paying like $2,200 out of pocket to get the items I sold out to customers. I eventually got that money back of course, but it was enough to make me stop dealing with ebay all together.

I was already on the brink. Their fees were getting higher and higher (all together probably 12% of gross profits) and they now include shipping cost into the final value fees as well! Not to mention that there is hardly any protection for sellers anymore, and you live in fear of negative feedback and regularly take losses in hopes to avoid them.

Thank goodness I was an IMer before an ebayer and had the good sense to build a list from all my ebay customers. The only way I have been able to survive is by running email promotions since I made my stand against ebay. I even took it a step further and actually sent out emails to my list and announced that I was "firing ebay". (This went over very well with them strangely enough, lol.)

I miss the old ebay, but I'm afraid it's gone forever. I have officially Donald Trumped their ****s. ;-)

At my most active, I'm a casual eBay seller. I think the largest number of items I had up for bids at one time was 6 or 7.

My wife likes to enter online contests and sweeps. Sometimes she wins stuff we don't want or can't use. So I offer it on eBay.

I've always restricted sales to either North America or the USA, more because I don't want to deal with customs, taxes, etc. than any other reason.

I've been getting paid on delivery for most things for a long time. So I pop for the extra $0.75 or so for delivery confirmation via USPS. Some things, like a pair of theme park tickets, required positive feedback before payment. Once the delivery was confirmed, I simply dropped the buyer a polite note asking her to check out the tickets and leave feedback so I could get paid. I had my money within a couple of hours.

If you're trying to build a real business on eBay or you are trying to make instant cash, the policy probably sucks. For sellers like me, it's business as usual and no big deal...

Ebay never did like sellers. They only put up with them because they paid the fees that kept Ebay in the money. They were tough on them when I was selling $1,000 per day back in 2000 to 2001 and they are getting tougher on them now.

Even back then I had sellers hijack my sales by bidding on my auction and then when I sent out my notice to buyers they hijacked it and took my buyers. My fault I guess because I didn't know to BCC all my buyers, instead of CC them. But Ebay didn't do anything about it when I complained to them. What did they care? My fees were paid automatically from my credit card on file.

Ebay is great as a buyer, but as a seller I think not.
    Tom

The key is to sell something regularly (not necessarily every day) to keep your account active. Then the instant payment works.

If you sell periodically, then eBay's auto-system kicks in on the basis that you could be a "fly by night" merchant from whom purchasers need to be protected.

If you sell regularly and keep your positive feedback increasing, you won't need to wait 90 days or even until the buyer receives the goods. The money will be in your account instantly they pay.
