My business isn't built around third party sites. It was just a small blog I was building to target a keyword for one of my money sites. Was building backlinks to this, using the same method I always use but have NEVER had this.

1. wordpress.com is not owned by you: they provide you with a free blog = they ARE third party in this equation.

2. Seemingly, you have never read their TOS. Do it now: Terms of Service — WordPress.com

the Content is not spam, is not machine- or randomly-generated, and does not contain unethical or unwanted commercial content designed to drive traffic to third party sites or boost the search engine rankings of third party sites, or to further unlawful acts (such as phishing) or mislead recipients as to the source of the material (such as spoofing);

I was saying that my whole business does not rely on third party software or websites. I didn't say wordpress.com isn't third party.

I very rarely (like most) read the T&Cs of anything.

I have been using Wordpress.com to build an extra tier in my backlinks, and have been using it for years and this is the first time it's been taken down, that's why I was asking.

I usually learn from your posts, and you obviously know marketing online better than me, but I couldn't disagree more with this particular point.

The reason is that we all download stuff on a regular basis, and so much stuff comes with pages and pages of legalese in tiny print. Even if we do read it, I doubt those of us who never attended law school could even understand most of the language.

I would much rather just follow the advice of more advanced people, than try to make sense of the mind numbing, incredibly lengthy TOS of most sites, softwares, etc.

Once you've spent 20 minutes trying to decipher a single page of the legalese, you realize that almost everything you read is just obvious stuff you would have followed anyway without problems.

The only exception I can see is if you are making most of your income from one particular site, then you probably should spend a few hours wading through their TOS. Otherwise, it's a huge waste of time, and by the time I finished, my eyes would need a day to recover before I could even start actually using whatever it is.

Just my 2 cents, and no offense-like I said, your advice is usually excellent and informative, but I bet you couldn't find one marketer in 1000 that actually reads the TOS for every piece of software they use, and for a good reason. (In fact I bet if you're really honest, you'd have to admit that most of the time, you don't read every word of those spirit-draining documents

)

Yet, you had time to post six paragraphs explaining why you don't have time to read the TOS for things you're using for your business. That doesn't make a lot of sense, does it? And most TOS aren't in legalese, either, but I guess you wouldn't know that if you're going out of your way not to read them?

I don't see anything "extremely demeaning," or even close to demeaning, in his post at all, unless there's an unlisted edit that I don't see. And you're being told "the basics of the basics of the basics" because you asked the basics of the basics of the basics, and you could have found the answer in five minutes had you actually looked at the TOS. I'm not really seeing what's got you so worked up.

And there's your answer, right there.

You were using it to generate traffic for and/or backlinks to a monetized site. That's "commercial", and wordpress.com is really for "hobby bloggers only".

You can (sometimes) get away with it for ever, if nobody ever "flags" it. But it takes only one "report" (by a competitor, possibly?) to have your blog removed, so it's just not worth it.

Wordpress is the worse for suspending sites. There are a lot of other properties you can use. I just don't bother with wp, so just move on and don't worry about it.

I used to sell services through a WP blog, years ago. It got taken down exactly as yours did.

It's definitely a better idea to get a web host and install WordPress yourself. You can make regular backups and you have full control. If your host ever screws you, you'll have backups to fall onto.

If you read Wordpress.com 's terms of use you'll find they don't want people using their blogs as backlink farms.

I'm not saying that was your intent, but Wordpress like Google (Panda) want people to stop using their products to game the system. They're instead interested in people who blog for a real interest other than building links.

Think about it. If you were in their shoes wouldn't you do the same?

And to all the people saying why didn't you host the WP site yourself etc. Well because I (and VAs) create these Wordpress type sites extremely often. I'm talking a few a week, imagine how much that lot would cost. No thanks.

It's been working up until this blog and my method hasn't changed, that why I started this thread initially, to see if they were having a sudden crack down or what?

I wasn't expected to get so much negativity and to be told the basics of the basics of the basics.

Dude there's all kinds of software out there to mass install and run multiple blogs on a server - some a bit tricky, but do your home work and you'll find some.

I will never understand why people always want the cheap or lazy way out to making money online. You want money, spend it, you want results, work your butt off.

Sorry if I spoke out of turn or offended anyone. Istvan, I was replying to Alexa's post which was telling someone to change the "habit" of "rarely" reading TOS documents-not sure how that means wordpress only, but pardon me if I'm wrong.

I realize you are the wordpress expert, but I probably still won't read their agreement if I'm not even using them. Please ignore my posts from now on, as I have no wish to waste any more of your time by arguing BS.

Paperchasing-yes I'm guilty of wasting time, but I choose how. It doesn't take but a minute to write six paragraphs when most of them are 2-3 lines long. I do that because it's easy on the eyes-I guess that's a theme with me. Beg your pardon as well, and anyone else that's offended.

This has happened to me a couple of times as well, I would seriously recommend you to never ever build your main website/blog on anything other than your own hosting with your own domain.

Which is more time-consuming?

1. Spending a few minutes/hours to read the TOS to make sure you don't violate them or

2. Ignore the TOS, spend days/months/years building a site and then have it deleted because you didn't do #1?

  The way I look at all this is, either I'm serious about my business or I'm not.
  
  If I am serious about my business then I consider 3rd parties or other service providers to my business somewhat as partners. As such, I will take the time to learn what to expect and what not to expect from my business partners. And, I will learn the expectations that my business partners have of me.....what I should do and what I shouldn't.
  
  I accept the responsibility to know the agreements I enter into. My business is too important to me to simply assume I have a vague or general understanding of the business agreements, or worse, that I don't need to worry about them.

I believe if one wants to download and install software on his local machine and disregard the TOS, that is one thing. However, using what someone allows you to use on his property, on a PUBLIC server for free, one should, at the very least, READ and ABIDE by the rules. That is the least of things, otherwise indeed one should prepare to "pay" one way or another. ...

It doesn't make too much sense to read the TOS, first, it is a lot of legalese, hard to read, second, you don't know what part of TOS they enforce and what part not, third, these sites change their TOS often, so again, more waste of time reading, comparing, etc.

It took me less time to search on google, find this thread, and realize that wordpress.com is for the hobbyists only.

Makes me think they should have used a different TLD

Just publish and see if the posts stick. If they don't, put the site in your wastebasket.

If they don't appreciate your writing, move on.

Greg, once you've actually read a few TOS, you discover that most of them only have 2-4 sections you need to decipher. The rest is usually boilerplate inserted by the lawyers because other lawyers will look for flaws if something goes south.

Once you know what to look for, it only takes a few minutes to look for the terms that really affect what you want to do. And most of those are written in reasonably clear English because sites want users to follow the rules. Making them obscure doesn't help that goal.
