What is the purpose of .xxx domains? Is it worth to buy if laptop.xxx is available for $99

Hi

I just got an email from godaddy that .xxx domains are available for registration for $99

But I am wondering what is .xxx domain for? Is it specifically for s*x or por* related niches?

If laptop.xxx or homes.xxx are available for registrations for $99, is it worth to purchase them?

Hope to get some inputs from expert here.

Thanks.

As you've alluded to, the ".xxx" domains are supposed to be for "adult" sites. Interestingly, the online adult industry is against this extension while the rest of the online world supports this as a means of creating a distinctive online "red light district."

Is it worth getting one? For the average Joe/Jane online, they associate ".xxx" with porn. What kind of credibility would you have if you wanted somebody to purchase something - with their credit card - at laptops.xxx?

Second, don't forget all of the firewall and virus programs that have "family" functions -- your ".xxx" could be automatically filtered. Not to mention countless public institutions that have free public online access that would block ".xxx" results (even if the website was not adult oriented).

Is it worth getting one? I'd wager that for mainstream IM, it wouldn't pay (unless you think you can flip a domain name for a hefty profit). If you're in the adult business, I don't think it would pay either quite frankly. Adult sites with .com extensions and the like are established and enjoy the prestige of having a .com extension like the rest of us.

I'd say it's worth it or not dependent upon your needs. If spending $99 on a domain name with an ".xxx" extension pleases you and you feel it would be a benefit to your online venture(s), it's worth it!

    P.S.

YES, people are purchasing "dogs.xxx" and "computers.xxx" but what they will be with them, who knows? Maybe as a re-direct? Maybe to flip?

No laptop.xxx would be a waste of money. girlsontop.xxx may be another story...

Like mentioned above, sites associated with the .xxx domain would be considered porn related sites by your everyday user. That's not saying that there might not be a market for "latptop.xxx" one day. But, as of now, I would say most people are staying away from them. That, in and among itself, may create a market later on for "superpopularkeyword.xxx" domains. For now, it's up in the air.

    here's what i found on name.com:
Individuals, business, entities, and organizations that provide online, sexually-oriented adult entertainment ("Online Adult Entertainment") intended for consenting adults or for other community members ("Providers"); Represent Providers ("Representatives"); or Provide products or services to Providers and Representatives ("Service Providers") are eligible to register .XXX domain names.
Non-members of the adult sponsored community can register non-resolving domains to protect their brands.
Click here to find out more about who qualifies for the sponsored community.
Non-resolving domains will not point to any website, and queries for these domains will return a default page explaining the domain's non-resolution status.

Yea, it was clearly intended for the adult niche. And with Google doing everything that they can to optimize their user experience I'm not so sure that you would even be able to rank for your intended keyword with the .xxx extension. I could very well be wrong about that but I can't remember ever coming across one while searching Google.

If google will rank them, im sure it will be worth it. With google's support, it has potential to become the standard for web porn.
