Question about email lists

Hi,

Just learning the ropes on email lists. I'm considering purchasing an email list. My question is regarding deployment. If I do purchase a list, what vendor can I use to send out the emails? I know that there certain rules to using purchased email lists and I plan to follow all of them. Can someone recommend a vendor that I can sign up with if I decide to purchase a list? Thanks.

"I'm considering purchasing an email list..." My friend, that's a dangerous game you're thinking of playing. You ultimately have no idea of what you're getting when you buy email lists.

It is infinitely better to gradually grow your own list. It may take some time, but in the long run it's the better way to go. Don't look for shortcuts, they almost inevitably bring disaster.

Search for this forum for the myriad threads on optin list building.

The best vendor is aweber. However, they frown on list importation.

Even if you have a tiny list of a hundred or less, it is still preferable than a list of a thousand or more "strangers."

There is so much that can go wrong with buying email lists... questions you need to ask are:

*how were the emails collected? (opt-in, double opt-in, harvested, niche specific etc.)
    *when were the emails collected?
*how often was this list marketed to?
*what are the most recent 'open' rates for emails to this list?

...and lots more, and then you've got to weigh up if the answers you get back are truthful or if they're just telling you what you want to hear.

Even if they were from a double opt-in list in a niche directly related to yours, they weren't double opt-in to you and therefore you open yourself up to spam issues.

IMO a better option is usually to find a list that is actively marketed to and contact the owner to see if you can run a special offer email to their list - depending on what they charge, you may be able to run several emails for a fraction of the cost it would have cost you to buy some random list and allow you a chance to get a kick-start building your own list.

I have never bought an email list and never will, sadly there are too many things that can go worng with them as Toasted 75 has pointed out. Not only that, but you never know if the list you have purchased will be any good for you and the niche you are in.

Just get a free report, or product in your niche to give away, build a good squeeze page built, and then buy a couple of solo ads from reputable sellers, and then do some adswaps.

    Just my opinion though.

I dabbled in buying email lists awhile back and the results were terrible not to mention there are a lot of rules you need to abide by. You need to scrub the list, make sure the list isn't being sold to more than 1 person, etc.

Your results will be light years better if you build the list yourself and it will become a long term asset. whereas buying lists is a short term game.
