Wordpress - Ease of going from free to pay

The title kind of says it all. I'm looking to build my Wordpress site this week, currently I would be using the free version of Wordpress but keeping it private it until it goes live, at which point I would plunk down the cash and get my domain name and hosting and push it live.

My question is how easy is it to do this? I've already selected the theme (it's not a premium one) and I have my content ready. So is it easy to convert a free Wordpress site to a "paying" Wordpress site?

Thanks all!

Since you already have your content, my advice is to get the paid site right away; Hostgator is like, what?, $7-bucks a month?

There are differences between the free and paid versions of WordPress and you'll just be frustrating yourself unnecessarily when you try to import everything. Yeah, it's going to cost you $7 (or whatever it is now), but you'll save potentially DAYS of frustration!

If you decide you don't like blogging, just cancel. You're out $7.

If you know you're going to do it for sure, go get hosting and start!

I agree, get hosting and just do it.
If you really can't get hosting for a week then just focus on creating more content for your blog. Then load it up next week when your ready.

Forget about building a blog at Wordpress.com and then transferring it.
It may not be that complicated but it doesn't really give you any advantages. Wordpress.com doesn't support plugins so you can't do any of that. You've decided on a theme so nothing to do there.

Why make life harder than it is?

There is no "free and paid" version of WP. That's for starters...

At wordpress.COM you can create a free blog hosted by them, which can NOT be used for commercial purposes. Read their TOS!
(and no, you can NOT add your own themes and/or plugins)

At wordpress.ORG your download the FREE WP software (blogging script) and you will have to install it on your own hosted domain. There you can do whatever you want with it

Ahh... Then I had totally been misreading their TOS. Thank you for clearing that up! That would of been a lesson learned the hard way.
