Quick Question About Wordpress

With wordpress, are you able to take your wordpress blog and register it under a domain (for example quinnsblog.com) and when people put in the URL quinnsblog.com it will display your blog over the web.

I am confused if you can host a wordpress blog using typical hosting (ie: bluehost or yahoo hosting) and have a typical domain or will your blog always be something like mywordpressblog.wordpress.com

Thanks

      Hi,

      It's up to you.

You can have it as -

      subdomain -

      blog.domain.com

      subdirectory -

      domain.com/blog

      or on the root -

      domain.com

The reason you so often see the subdirectory set up is because if someone has a static site (especially if it's a mini-site) then it is wise for SEO purposes to add a blog 'behind' it in order to get spider attention, add regular updates, get user generated content (comments), use the RSS feed, get exposure on blog directories EG technorati etc.

Quite often, if someone finds a subdirectory blog and finds it useful, they will 'chop' the end off the url in order to check out what the home page is about. So if you had a salespage (1 page site) by continually adding stuff 'behind' it, you might get more eyeballs where you want them (the salespage).

exRat is right. WP is very flexible, which is one reason why it's so popular. If you intend to build a big ole domain, or a nested niche, subdirs are the way to go. Otherwise subdomains are probably a better bet. Just my 2c!

i think he confuses the hosted with the "stand-alone" wordpress.

there is a wordpress similar to blogger, where you can make a blog online and then you get a "hosted" blog under yourname.wordpress.com

I dont know anything about it since i host all my wordpress blogs myself, on my own domains.

    And yes Quinn,

the normal way is to install Wp on YOUR site, especially since most hosting providers have a VERY easy wordpress installer in CPanel/Fantastico already.

So you go to Cpanel/Fantastico and install WP on your URL and it will create a WP on your url, whatever URL you have,

(There are more ways to install also.)

      Hi GeorgR,

I wondered that too, and if so, they could still have it appear under their url (in each of the three versions) by doing a redirect, but then it wouldn't be -

are you able to take your wordpress blog and register it under a domain
'registered' - it would just be redirected.

Perhaps if the OP could clarify...

I just did that. But, from blogger.com to my own domain.
I guess its the same with wordpress. It should be easier if you use the Export Import feature in Tools. You can move all content directly to the wordpress installation in your own domain.
