I never Immagined Mobile Could be Doing This for Me, Is it For You?

I just checked in on Google Analytics, using their new interface, and drilled into the much greater granularity allowed now. I specifically looked at mobile which is now broken out to the extent you can tell exactly which mobile platform and device has accessed your content.

To my complete surprise, mobile visits to one of my more popular sites has increased by 120% in the last 9 weeks. This trend shows every sign of continuing, and if anything is accelerating.

Have you noticed this rapid mobile growth on yours as well? It definitely points to the importance of a mobile version.

    I am not sure, since I didn't know it it was such a significant traffic source for this site. Historically, I'd only gotten about 5% of my traffic from mobile, but this site's (in the relationship niche) traffic from mobile devices is up to 32% now, and has averaged about 23% for the past 60 days.

    You can bet I'll be looking into this much more closely now.

    In terms of which devices people use, the iPhone leads the way, with the iPAD next, iPOD Touch 3rd, SonyEricsson LT15i Xperia Arc 4th, and the HTC EVO 4G rounding out the top 5 devices visitors use to visit my site in terms of number of visits per device.

    More of us are beginning to see the upswing in mobile usage of our websites.

    And conversion is important, but if our sites are not mobile-ready, then I would think conversion would be much smaller than it could be potentially.

    Those in the know are predicting that the U.S. mobile market is still quite young, and that by 2015, more U.S. internet users will be accessing the net by mobile than by computer.

    There have to be some usability studies around somewhere on how to optimize your site for mobile. Not just ready for mobile, but actually designed specifically for the smaller GUI on the mobile devices.

    Thanks for this - I think all of us old-schoolers need to look deeper into
    what devices people are using to BROWS and BUY...especially on sites
    where we may have had a decline in sales - maybe there is as much
    interest, but if they are using mobile now instead of PCs then we need
    to make it more user friendly for them, for sure.

    Yours has been the best post here for me in a long time.!

    Hmmm, interesting. I really haven't been thinking about making mobile version of my sites at all. At least not yet. Better take a closer look at my analytics to see if the same is happening.

    Perhaps it's time to grab on of those WSOs and start dealing with this?

    At recent conference with thousands of participants I noticed a huge number of people with smartphones.

    I was able to talk to many as I was a driver, and I do this every year as a volunteer, and lots were not even using desktops now just tablets and mobiles.

    I have built over 500 mobile sites this year and they are all doing quite well for my customers.

    Now obviously I am bias because I sell ways to make mobile websites but this market has gone from nothing last year to booming this year.

    Over 100 million smart phones sold in one year so definitely a growing market.
