Huge mistake You do in internet marketing

The most essential things you can focus on when you are building an online business are the assets that your business has. Most people really misunderstand what kind of assets they got in their business.

A huge mistake many Internet Marketers do is spending a lot of the time on marginal SEO results, obsessed with how they can improve their position in the search engines. The problem is SEO isn't an asset and it can be taken away from you without any notice, according to the information that Google has given us did they change the SEO algorithm over 500 times in 2010, and on times they do a huge update where some high ranked websites that has invested thousands just disappear, ending in the same position they were in, at start up with almost no traffic.
List building is considered an asset. No matter where you are ranked on Google or what penalty you get, your list will always be yours, and that is what your online business should be built around.

The email marketing is estimated to generate $ 40.16 for every $ invested in 2012. The reason why many online businesses don't get much out of their email list is because of they don't establish a relationship with the peoples on it, just consider it another way to generate traffic to an sales page. Not providing the email list with valuable information, will keep them interested in what you have to say and see you as some kind of an expert in the field which makes you their go to guy. When you got a good relationship with your list it is much more likely that they are willing to give you their credit card information, which is the hardest thing to get on the internet.
How to build the email list?

It really depends on the niche, if you write about for example: Sexual Improvement (which has such a broad appeal) it could fit any Age group / gender / Financial situation, once in their life they will be curious about this topic and likely look into the field therefore there is nothing wrong with having an large list that isn't very targeted.

But if you were writing about how to hit strike more often in bowling, you would need to target people there has some interest in bowling and really want to see the reaction of their friends when they see the beautiful Score they've achieved. Which could be an person 18-45 years old interested in bowling. As you can see the second list is much more targeted than the first, because an 75 years old female wouldn't be valuable for the second list.
You need to understand what makes the costumers interested in your stuff, what makes them excided. Find those peoples and deliver the information / product they want.

You can have the best sales pitch in the world but as long as you don't get qualified interested peoples you won't make a sale.

List building is not only for affiliate marketers. But for every online business.
As Mentioned above, there are so many changes in the SEO yearly, of course you should do SEO, but it's not where you should spend the majority of your time. Because whats right today can be wrong tomorrow, Therefor delivering quality targeted content and write decent meta data, will get peoples to link the article and from there you will generate Links.
but on the other hand, lists can benefit you in so many ways.
JV partnership. Product promotions, Surveys, Polls, new product ideas, relaunches, increase buying frequency to mention a few.

Yeah, the mistake I did initially when I started IM was not building a list. That was costly. I had tons of traffic to my sites but the conversions were terrible. I know better now.

Building a list is crucial for long term success. But what you want more than anything is a buying list - not just any list.
A list of buyers (only a few 1000's) will out perform many lists which are much bigger if they're just a general list - hopefully that makes sense.

In my experience, it's a fact. Buyer lists invariably outperform prospect lists.

      Makes perfect sense.

This is an aspect I have been failing miserably at, I am going to focus more on building a "buying list"? Any tips for that?

I think every internet marketer makes mistakes throughout their whole 'online' career. It's all a learning curve and I laugh when I think of some of the things I used to do and focus on years ago... and I'm sure next year I'll think the same about some of the stuff I'm doing now. I think mistakes are there for every marketer to make and learn from. It's the only way in my opinion.

Wouldn't really call it a mistake through the whole career.
The internet is a dynamic place, it changes all the time. What was efficient yesterday might not be efficient today, therefore you need to adopt to the environment & having several different ways to market your products.

indeed, building list is a long term success
it's combining with traffic. If you only have couple people visit your site per month then you will feel depressing.
that's why for we need to build list while increasing the site traffic.

I made the mistake of not building a list from day one. But I know better now. As others have said, this is what is needed to build a long term business as long as you can build a relationship with that list, and not just send them a promo email every other day. That just ticks people off.

Getting caught up doing things that aren't important like changing colors and palying around with design. That is a big trap for many people. Yes I've seen in too much.

In my early days I spent hours on this stuff. I learned it wasn't important ... or at least not the most important. The most important was traffic and conversion (conversion for sales, opt in, etc.). Now I dedicate the first 4 to 5 hours of every day focusing on traffic and conversion - usually by writing content and promoting it. That's it. After that, once I'm tapped out from writing, I'll do less important stuff.

Ever since I dedicated the first 4 to 5 hours of every day to writing content and promoting it, my traffic, revenue, and lists have built steadily upward. It works.
