How did craigslist advertise when they started out?

We have a free classifieds site, and we're in a similar situation as craigslist when they started out: we're the first free classifieds site where everything is done automatically (no user interaction). Our competition is very weak.

So my question is: what strategies did craigslist implement to increase the amount of people that go to their site to post free ads?

We've done lots of facebook advertising and we have tons of fans, but we want to use different venues without the need to break the bank and go broke.

Thanks.

Some very good reasons for their success here: http://www.startup-review.com/blog/c...case-study.php

I'm completely confused about your statement that you're "the first free classifieds site where everything is done automatically (no user interaction). Our competition is very weak."

Every classifieds site on the internet is automated now (unless I'm misunderstanding you) and unless you're in a very, very specific classifieds niche (and maybe you are), your competition is likely fierce. There's millions of classifieds websites on the web now, so I can't imagine many untapped niches there.
