(Rant) The Need for Dozens of Mediocre Amazon Sites

i read on here daily people mentioning how they have upwards of 6 or 7 product review sites but only one or 2 are actually producing sales numbers. i myself bought into that same mindset. I purchased Jan Roos' Amazon Program last December (fantastic product that really gave me the how to on how build a nice site - i had never even bought a domain until i i watched that series) but one of the key things i took away from that guide was the need to build mutliple niche sites.

i had 3 sites built in about a months time and i thought i was on my way to riches beyond compare. now here i am a year later and November was finally my 1st truly successful month: i made $432 off Amazon in November and so far this month (only 11 days) i've already surpassed amount of sales i made last month and my earnings are almost $400.

however for the past year i struggled immensely because i tried to build my armada of money pulling sites instead of focusing on only one and building that 1st into a gold mine.

nearly 95% of all sales these past 2 months came from the site i've been focusing solely on. the other 2 sites currently are just costing me "renewal fees" in namecheap.

i've heard many warriors say they have many sites making about $100 each per month in Amazon and they seem happy with that? why?

why not focus your efforts and energy into just one site, pimp out all the big-ticket keywords and take your site from maybe 80 uniques per day to 600 per day and so on? that's alot of money you're leaving on the table.

for me:
as of right now i'm getting around 150 unique visitors daily and i'm not even on page 1 yet for my big-ticket keywords.

i plan on working this site until i'm getting at least 600 unique visitors per day until i even consider asking my seo guy to look at my other sites.

i guess i fail to see why many warriors are maximizing just one of their sites but instead bringing in only decent traffic to their dozens of sites

I wonder when someone is going to make a rant about people making rants on this forum. Its probably been done before a few times...

OP, it seems like you have had some success with Amazon's affiliate program. This is something that many people who enter the field of IM do not achieve (unfortunately). You found one website that makes you money. The logical thing to do is give that website more attention.

However, it is not wrong to develop multiple websites. The reason people create more than one website in more than one niche is to add some variety to their portfolio. Having one website that is making you money is great. However having two or three is even better. Once you find these money makers, you keep adding content, you keep improving your rankings, and you keep making more and more money.

A lot of people do not feel comfortable putting all of their time and energy into one website, only to find out that the one website they worked hard on is not going to make them the amount of money they had hoped. That is why people develop multiple websites. You need to test different niches. You need to find the ones that can make you money. It is a valid approach.

In fact, think about it this way. What if, last year you decided to develop only one website and focus on it. What if the website you chose, was one of the two you have laying around now that do not make you any money. How would you feel? Probably not as good as you feel right now, considering you have a website that makes you a few hundred dollars.

Nice work on that site. $400 per month passive income is not bad from that site. I have found 4 sites to be the sweet spot. Build 4 and work them hard, then reinvest profits into another project of 4 sites.

thanks for both of your responses, Jan and Eddie

Jan, your course is top notch and like mentioned, i learned just about everything i know from wordress use, site domain selection and product selection from what i learned in your course.

i just wish i would'nt have wasted the past year trying to make each site work simultaneously but instead focused on only one.

maybe i just got real lucky in my product selection but when the other 2 niche sites i chose (home electronics field and outdoors field) got random spikes (20 visitors a day) of traffic for a day or two, sales occured from them as well.

i can see all 3 being serious money producers but right now, my "baby" is what i'm focusing on now and i want to turn it into a monster.

        Nice job!

I used to be in the mindset of building sites one after the other, but the only thing it did was spread my focus way too thin. Sure, I did make money with all the sites I had out there, but I could have made way more by focusing on just one or two at a time and building them up. Now I just focus on a couple of sites at a time and it works out so much better for me.

If you read through the forum, you will find that there are basically 3 types of people

Those that make it happen (People that have been in IM for a long time)
Those that watch it happen (People that work at it and realize it takes time)
Those that say what the F@£k happened (people that buy push button Make me rich quick software..........every month!!!!!)

Seriously, pat yourself on the back, you have earns. BTW, is it Google traffic or PPC? Google has gone mad recently with its new updates.

Anyway, well done, onwards and upwards.

i am getting traffic purely from search engine traffic. i have a desire to look into other forms of traffic but it is kind of intimidating so i dont really know where to begin with that

It takes just as much effort and time to sell something at $1,000 as it does to sell something else at $5.

Dont waste your time chasing pennies. Go where the money is.

Good job! Are you following Jan's plan exactly, or are you making your own modifications as you go along?

This is a great testimonial not just to that course, but to your own willpower and dedication for making that happen. I just got my first real Amazon commission payment, and it's addictive...

People that go for multiple sites do so because any site, even a big one can get slapped around hard by Google.

What I like to do is to test a niche with Hubpages and Squidoo. Before I put all the time into doing a niche site.

Red, I'm not trying to rain on your parade here. Truly, I'm not. Just keep in mind that the two successful months you're (justifiably) excited about are the two months many retailers look forward to all year. The holiday gift binge keeps many businesses alive the rest of the year.

I hope you can report similar growth after the new year...

So back to the original question. Why do people start multiple sites rather than focusing on just one?

A lot of newer folks are simply guessing on their product selection. So they start multiple sites, then do what you did and work on the winners. Even folks that have been around awhile get surprised regularly by what actually sells well.

At a group seminar of some of the sharpest copywriters in the world, the leader (Dan Kennedy?) put up a list of headlines and asked the assembled masters to pick the most successful headline.

      They were not even close...

It's the same with product selection, and creating sites. Some will be big winners, some will be total losers and most will muddle along in the mediocre middle.

It's probably because not a lot of people like to put all their eggs in one basket. If that one focused gets dropped for whatever reason at least you have backups, no use putting all your energy and tweaking into one site and then BAM in an instant your site is gone. At least with a multiple backups you can always rise back up. Much like dating really, if somehow things go south with the one focused partner - I always keep multiple backups to prop me back up when I need to recover

Is there really a need for millions of mediocre websites with little or no value?

Certainly not, but millions of webmasters think that is the way their websites must be.

I hear ye op... I bought Jans course back in Feb I think. Took until August to start making money, which I was happy with.

As with yourself, most of my money is coming from 1 site... pulling in 10k visitors a month.

I am aware though, that my traffic trend is high from Oct to Jan... so, it's important to be aware of this, and have other sites to take up the slack when this traffic drops.

My best month was October, $986, so close to breaking 1k!

This month, half way through and I'm up to $751... so should make over 1k.

I'm learning and tweaking all the time.

I've 4 other amazon sites, 2 are early atempts that make the odd sale here and there, and the other should bring in some good money once I can rank it.

I've 2 others in development... the earnings from my main site will give me the freedom to develop these... I expect earnings from main site to drop by 1/4 if not less.

I think if you can find a product that sells all year round, that has good traffic, then you can focus soley on this... Jan mentioned this in his course.

I guess it depends on whether you'd like to make $100 soon or a couple of grand later on down the road...

Creating multiple sites also helps alleviate the fatigue factor. Working on one site ALL the time can be a brain drain. Moving smoothly from one to another, developing them simultaneously reduces the potential of getting stale... and bored. Some brains need the stimulation of multiple challenges to conquer.

Cool thread! I made the "mistake" of building like 15 sites after going through Jan's course. It's okay though because now I can afford a part time VA with my ~$350/month from the two sites that are doing okay in the SERPs (although Google killed me on 10/13...still haven't fully recovered).

I have my team working on 5 sites right now, and once those are ranked, they'll move onto the next 5.

I think a lot of it depends on how you like to work and spend your time. Do you like doing things in batches or doing a little bit of everything every day? Either way, eventually you will need more than one or two sites to make the big bucks AND protect yourself from these damn Google changes.

lol I actually had alot of thoughts about this..I recently got a premium domain and I didn't want to waste it on a small review site that has few products..I decided to take a niche and review all the products in it ( after doing the right research) I figured out that I will be making money if I do it the right way, I work fulltime 9-5 and when I come home I work from 7-1 , I am trying to make something professional.. I decided to use Joomla since I prefer it..nice earnings ! keep it up!

I was wondering what type of backlinking method did you use and in each article how many links to amazon did you post? did you include the reviews ( how many stars)

    Thanks

I've been reading a lot about this lately and am thinking that's it's actually not a bad thing to build a bunch of sites regularly. Niche Pursuits talks about building 20+ sites a month and weeding out the losers from the rest (better yet, identifying the winners and letting go of the rest). It's a safe strategy, especially if you diversify how you monetize.
