Can hosting companies do this?

INTERNET MARKETING

A client of mine went to renew there domain, and the price jumped up to $217.98 when they first brought the domain is was $38 for 2 years.

My question is

Is this strategy common with dodgy domain sellers?

Can they legally hold a domain?

Yesterday the domain "expired" yet the site is still up, and you can't try and buy the domain somewhere else as they say it's still registered.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and what did they do to resolve it?

I have spoken to the support it seems like English is not their first language.

(1) Sunny Coast? Seriously? How could we not cross ways yet LOL

(2) Of course they can, BUT you can transfer out as long as the domain is not in pending delete at the registry. (ICANN regulations - look here: ICANN | Policy on Transfer of Registrations between Registrars

most important quote:

Instances when the requested change of Registrar may not be denied include, but are not limited to:
Nonpayment for a pending or future registration period

We had to do it quite a few times in the past, let me know if you need help.

I can see something like this happening with a "dodgy" domain seller yes. The reason the site is still up is probably because the domain is in "redemption period". Its to bad that has happened.

Not exactly right, it's very unusual for a "redemption period" to still have the nameservers point correctly and 1 day after expiry a redemption period + for sale somewhere else, I don't think so - usually registrars keep them in their system to resell and only put them up for deletion a lot later. (they got 45 days for free to try selling them!)

Oh and btw, you shouldn't pay more than $8-9 for .com's (if it's .com) - sad that still some people get ripped off.

It is ridiculous to charge $217.98 for one year domain renewal. Which hosting company do you use?

  It's not me, it's a client of mine typical mum & pop style business the hosting company is Domain Names Registration & Web Hosting | Website Creator
  
  Not only that the hosting is really poor as well, they charged $200 dollars for the year with very limited resources e.g. only 10 emails???
  
  The run on a Windows based server it costs extra for Linux
  
  I was having trouble with ftp access so I asked them to install WordPress for me they gave me version 1.2.2 of WordPress even though WordPress is at 3.3?
  
  I have never dealt with such a bad online company before. (yes I know there are a heap of them out there)

Okay Tim, you should have mentioned .com.au in the first posting

Anyway, here the relevant document:

auDA > auDA Published Policies > Domain Renewal, Expiry and Deletion Policy (2010-01)

--- from what I read, if it is "officially expired", the DNS doesn't resolve anymore, so it can't be expired yet. If it were, you are out of luck, as it can't be transferred anymore like a .com ---

Hm, I looked at their site and it's pretty shady. Why don't you remind them about the Trade Practices Act and get your client out of there, not looking back? The terms don't seem to be clear and ass far as I remember my law studies, it's definitely "likely to mislead" - so get them with the legal jambo and RUN!

I am definitely no expert on au domains and the price seems ridiculous, but is there any chance the price also includes hosting? I know it is still way overpriced hosting, but the $218 is ridiculous.
