That's actually what I was going to say lol. You can link your bank accounts, credit cards, your PayPal account, pretty much anything. I like to use the budgeting tool and set up bill reminders through them. A very convenient (and free) service.

Depends on your needs - business, personal, have to send out invoices, etc.

Also, if you prefer a web solution, or something on your computer. If the latter, try GnuCash or KMyMoney, both opensource and cross-platform.

I've used Quickbooks for about a decade. It's easy to learn, works well, and most importantly for me, it lead me to finding an excellent Accountant that's very happy to use it.

Thanks guys. I'm an accountants nightmare. I'll have to look into mint. I've been way too disorganized for way too long and I'm afraid it may end up costing me. Time for a new New Year resolution.

Before clicking into this thread, I was completely prepared to post about Mint. My wife and I use it religiously. It's really a great, free, online tool, that's for sure!

Thanks for the amazing info! I have looked into mint.com already but after reading their terms and agreements feel uneasy using them as they have complete control over your data and info. Has anyone else looked into their terms or was it just me? I have lots of private and confidential data that I will be recording (including bank accounts in different countries) and want to be 100% sure that my data and info remains private and confidential, ie not sold to third party or open to the employees of mint.com

I have used the service for two years now and never had a problem. Of course, there is a risk (as there always is with your personal information), so it was smart of you to consider this. You just have to decide if you are comfortable with it.

I decided I was, and haven't been burnt yet (fingers crossed).

It is encouraging to see people asking about this. Most people that enter this space don't give a rats arse about book keeping and it will bite them in the butt sonner or later.

    Back to your question...

It really depends on what your needs are. Do you have payroll?

Somebody mentioned Quickbooks and I would concur that QuickBooks does a damn fine job for my book keeping.

Exactly why I canceled my account there ... prefer to be in control of my own data, as far as possible.

I have an Open Office spreadsheet so I can look a few months into the future and have a pretty good idea what my bank balance will be. Budget (the program is actually called that) for Mac is a great envelope system program that keeps me more on track than most budgeting software, as it gives you a glance at how much money you have available to spend each month in each category. You can set it up to direct specific dollar amounts or percentages into specific envelopes each time you enter a bank account transfer from Paypal to your account. For instance, it could direct the first $50 to food, the next 30% to housing, and the remainder to a travel fund until the travel fund reaches $100, then split it evenly between your utility envelopes... you get the point.
