Problem / Question with articles...

I have a fairly large site which I am trying to push affiliate links through. I used a keyword analytic tool and sussed out my main competitor.

All of his articles are in .html format and he is ranking #1 for all of these. I am wondering if I should do the same and use HTML or would it be better to use Wordpress or PHP?

I have got 4 very nice articles ready to go but would like to know which format is most search engine friendly.

Thank in advance

P.S.
part 2 .... should I put these articles in the main domain or make a separate subdomain for each?

Page type (.html, .php, etc.) doesn't matter. What does matter is that your content is readable, well-formatted, informative, and helpful. SEO won't even matter after a while, so forget about the subdomain trick. Google caught on and isn't giving it a second thought.

Providing you have good quality SEO in your articles, well structured and written content for visitors then you can have it in any format you like (excluding image and flash of cause). What the search engines care about mostly is how it helps their customers conducting the search, if your post receives good feed back (shared via social sites or blogs) then you will rank higher, this is the key with the new google update at least.

Main domain holds more search engine weight in my opinion than a sub domain.

Nice to see another member who stays current with what's happenin'! So who are you? SearchEngineWatch, WebProNews, or SearchEngineLand fan? Other?

The reason I thought of the subdomain was because the actual title toaster.xxx.com would be relevant vs xxx.com/index/toaster.

You can see why it is confusing.

WordPress + SEO plugins is a great choice, as it sorts out all of the on-page optimization for you. Then, you can just build links to your pages using whatever backlinking methods you usually would.
