What can I do to make my video testimonials look professional?

Please move this thread if there is a better place for it.

So I am getting ready to start recording the testimonials for my business from real clients. I recorded two before but just having a good camera isn't enough. The whole straight-ahead view just didn't look that professional at all. If anyone here is in the video production field it would be awesome if you could give me some tips.

Should I actually sit them down and ask them questions or just let them talk? Where should I place the camera? Etc, etc..

First I would get a quick intro video from Fiverr specifically for your testimonials. It can include your logo and URL. Something under 20 seconds. (or alternatively a longer outro video).

Then record with proper lighting at face level or a little higher than face level. Don't set the camera below face level or it looks like they're talking down to the camera (sounds funny but you'd know what I mean if you saw it).

Then include your logo as a watermark over the video in the right hand corner or lower center. Maybe some light background music. And if you don't use a video outro just insert a splash screen with your URL.

Oh yeah and I'd just let them talk, unless you want more of a case study style testimonial. In that case I would ask them questions, cut out the part where you're asking and just include a splash screen with the text. For example a black screen with white text "How has your ROI changed" and then it jumps to them answering the question.

Everything Dan said is right on the money.

When it comes to the actual testimonial, just let them talk so that it looks authentic. It is all the other stuff you add to what the person says that makes it look more professional.

However, I might add that I've just done and seen done lots of people recorded for real at seminars and events and in offices and no one was concerned with the look as the number of authentic testimonials from all different people.

One of the best ways to make a video "look" professional is to have good sounding audio, so get a good microphone. They can be found on amazon for $25.

I agree with what's been said. The part with them talking and what they do should look natural, not professional. however, you can sandwich the testimonial in between some intro music and graphics about your company or event.

And maybe while the person is speaking, have some music playing lightly and maybe some text under their face saying something like "Marco Triblett, Doubled His Revenues" or whatever succinct benefit they got from it.

I would check out TV adverts on youtube and see how the professionals do it, there are loads of products (makeup etc) that have normal people giving a testimonial, see what they do and try and replicate it.

I found out that the mic on my $300 HD camera sucks, so I'm going to have to mesh the audio together with the video. (Recording audio from a laptop with a mic and video from the camera, haha.)

I can't seem to find a good angle or position to put the camera. I'll tweak it around a little more though and see what I can come up with. Thank all of you for your answers.
