What's Your Favorite List Building Method?

There are so many ways to build a list. You can do the squeeze page, you can offer a give-away, or you can make it a requirement for the people to submit their email in order to purchase something.

Obviously, some of these methods are better than others. After all, a list made up of buyers is obviously going to be more valuable than a list gotten from giving away free reports.

So, what's your favorite way to build a list? Have you found some ways to be more effective than others?

Thanks for your response!

Usually giving something for free works really well.

First, get your conversion rate up as high as you can by testing your language and opt-in form placement, style, colors, etc. Do free traffic methods while testing, then spend money on solo ads if you want to build quicker.

Just make sure you have something that's perceived as valuable to get people to sign up. And a good tip if you need to recoup your ad costs is to include a one-time offer as they're subscribing. The benefit there beyond covering ad spends is putting more buyers on your list on the front end. Known buyers are usually better prospects than a list full of freebie takers (especially if you're not good yet at turning freebies into buyers).

So far as the nuts and bolts of how to do it, I think it's mostly done in 2 ways on my sites and among the marketers in my niche:

    1) Squeeze pages -- send as much traffic here as you can, visitors have nowhere else to go but to opt in or leave

    2) Blogs/Landing pages for SEO traffic -- Set up things on EVERY page of the site to collect optins. I would have an opt-in form in the header or sidebar prominently displayed, plus an optin popup like Action Popup, and a Footer Slide-Up opt-in form of some kind.

What I would like to know is...how can I send SEO traffic to land on a squeeze page? I'd prefer to send EVERY new visitor to a squeeze page vs plopping them in a blog post where the opt-in % is always going to be lower.

Not too sure how to drive SEO traffic direct to a squeeze page, but with regards to improving optins to a blog post, you could place an optin form at the start, middle or end of the blog post.

But I am sure you were aware of that anyway.

I have ditched the webform and now use software to build my list.
I give away copies and to use the software it needs to be activated by requesting a special code via email.

All autopilot, No worries about people filling in the webform to get the software, you just give them a link and let them go Nuts.

Signups are way Higher than anything i have done before and by providing some good value and continued access to freebies etc, the lists are quite responsive.

    Cheers mate

I use this one too. Works pretty well. It's something like giving a toy to a child and then telling him not to play with it. Definitely the child does anything to play with it...

This is the same method that I use, especially if I am new to a niche.

Also the way that you can interact with your potential clients on Face book is a winner.

PS. Like the Bruce Lee quote, especiallyas I do Wing Chun.

Wow, guys, thanks a lot for your great input. Zeus, what you say makes a lot of great sense. I especially like the idea of putting up an upfront investment in paid-ads in order to build up a list faster. I'm sure this investment would pay itself off many times over.

When you use a paid-ad technique like this, what size of list can you expect to create over, say, a month or two? How much do your usually spend on a campaign?

Also, you mention pairing a one-time-offer with your efforts. Are you talking about giving them the option to buy something while they join your list, or are you structuring it so that only the people who buy the offer get on the list?

Oda, your suggestion was really unique as well.

Thank you very much, everyone, for all of your input!

My favorite listbuilding method is using sending PPV (CPV) traffic to my squeeze pages. But PPV traffic can be quite untargeted and conversions in the backend may not be that great, if not done properly. With PPV, you can get such a high volume of traffic and build up a list quite quickly.

This sounds like a method that can create you a large list fast. However, I'm sure it requires knowledge on your part so that you don't waste money. It's probably good to make sure that you are targeting the right keywords and that your lading page/squeeze page converts well.

Do you find that building a list using PPV is better than PPC? I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on this.

A plug-in like digilistbuilder on your main blog will bring in very targeted leads, but it relies on you creating quality content that people want to read.

The best way is to really target your offer to the niche you want to build a list in. For example I targer marketers who are using safelists, so I give away the first part of my course when I mail out to safelists.

On traffic exchanges I advertise a splash page that takes people to the best blog posts, and for me this works far better than putting a squeezepage in rotation.

Overall you just need to track and test what works best for your niche, and remember that although video is what the top people in IM are using doesn't mean that it will convert better in your niche.

Offer a useful product, then market a tailored landing page to people who are interested in that product via guest posts. The conversion rates are huge if you do it right. Labor-intensive though.

Get paid traffic from solo ads and Facebook ads. Facebook is fast becoming the next Google adwords. For free traffic, distributing free reports on pdf directories is a good way.

Thanks for all of the different methods, everyone!

Regarding Facebook ads, I'm hearing increasingly more that Facebook is going to be the next big thing in PPC. However, I'm kind of wondering if Facebook isn't going to give me a lot of people who don't have any real buying intentions. Have any of you found that lists from Facebook ads convert less than average?

      Great advice everyone!

I don't really have one method for list building, it's more of a combined effort of a number of things that snowballs the whole process.

It also depends on the niche but for MMO which it seems that you're interested in there are no shortage of opportunities. Each post that you make is an advertisement for your list and all you have to do is be helpful. I find a direct correlation between days when I post some useful content and an increase in opt ins.

Offering a free report to the War Room can be helpful as well. You can't force an opt in but you put a link to your squeeze page at the beginning and end of the report and you'll get some traffic.

Jenniferlne gave some good advice with the free WSO strategy. It can be very effective but it's not a free source of traffic. An alternative method would be to charge a small fee for it and give 90-100% commissions to affiliates. That way you have people actively promoting it for you and you're building a list of buyers rather than all freebie's.

    Best of luck!

    1- solo ads.
    2- Ezine newsletters.
    3- ppc
    4- Giveaways (people love them)

    Hope I helped.

I usually build or have someone build me a simple software program to make something work better and give that away. It costs me a couple of hundred or more but the returns far outreach the price.

I also usually have about six ebooks or so behind the software program for a set of autoresponders so I can upsell on the 8th. One for the software six for the ebooks or info and then one to upsell.

I love the websites I build that say, how to, how to get rid of, How to make ......... better. How to do it.......... ect, they always do good. People will pay a good price do something better, get rid of something they hate, ie; bugs ect.

    Hey Amarketing,

There are some great methods up here

I personally use a freebie to build my list, but, the freebie offers value, and if anything it really over delivers, this is something I've come to learn. You can't just give away good content, you have to give away great content, otherwise you won't stick out from the crowd.

Be a giver not a taker
