NameCheap & HostGator Question

If I decide to purchase a domain on NameCheap, can I right away change the DNS settings to host it on my HostGator account? I know when I tried hosting a domain I purchased on GoDaddy there was this 60 day period where I couldn't do any sort of transferring and such. Thank you!

Pretty sure I read it being a universal registrars law that you have to wait 60 days before transferring. I just change the nameservers on my godaddy domains to point to hostgators and they're hosted there within 20 mins. Don't see a difference in that and a complete transfer. namecheap i have no experience with.

So I won't have to wait any time (except the 20 minutes or whatever) to be able to host my site on HostGator after purchasing it on NameCheap? I can use HostGator's 1-click Wordpress install and all?

Transferring a domain from one registrar to another (e.g. from GD to NC) is completely different than editing the nameservers (DNS) info. And the two things have nothing to do with each other...

Yes, you can update your DNS right away after registration.

In any case, updating DNS settings (or "changing nameservers") doesn't constitute a transfer of the domain. The domain stays put at NameCheap, you're simply "pointing it" to your host's web server.

Transferring a domain means to "physically" move the domain from one registrar to another, and that's a totally different proposition.

I will often register a new domain at NameCheap, update the DNS and have my new blog/site up and functioning within less than 5-10 minutes.

    OK.....
I have purchased a domain at Namecheap
I want to send it over to my cpanel at Hostgator
I found the place at NameCheap to put those funky codes in from Hostgator.
I can't find those codes on my Cpanel.

I did this before but it was at Godaddy and I have forgotten how to do this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

It should be in the left column of your cpanel. The nameservers are listed there.

if you're logged into hostgator cpanel, the Nameserver addresses are in the left sidebar near the bottom in the account information box.

they're also in the email hostgator sent you when you set up that hosting plan.

HostGator have a great support service available 24x7, so you will really save your self a lot of time and effort by just asking them for help.
Anyway, you should have gotten an email from them stating your account's info, including the two nameservers.

    Best of luck.

Actually, you can point the nameservers to your host on any registrar. The 60 day thing only means that you can't transfer the domain out of the registry for 60 days. So if you were going to sell it, you could still transfer it to the new owner as long as the new owner created an account at that registry. After 60 days, you can transfer it to another registry if you want.

Absolutely yes, once you purchase a domain from Namecheap and there's no problem at all, then you can easily transfer and edit the DNS so it will point to your Hostgator account, and you can do this in less than 10 minutes these days. So, you can have a blog set up in about 15 minutes.

This is exactly what I did. I started out with Godaddy and Hostgator. I ended up going with Namecheap later on and there was no problem transferring my domain over to hostgator.

Yes, I have never had an issue with the transfer of the Nameservers to the hostgator like someone else said. I know this has always worked great for me!

    Hey Ross,

Okay here's exactly how to change your domain name DNS settings at NameCheap.

    1. First, you need to find out what your Name Servers are going to be. Login to your HostGator account and scroll to the bottom of your Cpanel. You are looking for "Account Information" section and you'll find your Name Servers.

    2. Then you need to go to NameCheap, Login and click on the domain name you want to change the DNS settings. Look to the left side and you'll find this information. Click on Transfer DNS to Webhost as shown below.

    3) Then you will need to enter the two Name Servers you got from your HostGator account here. And then click Save... (very important)

Now you just have to wait anywhere from 20 minutes to 24 hours for the domain name to propagate.

Yes, you can change the DNS as soon as you buy the domain, in fact, as part of the process you are asked for the DNS information....

I don't use namecheap, but I do use hostgator and I love it for hosting. And yes you can easily install wordpress on hostgator using fantastico.

I register my domains at 1and1.com and it usually only takes 1-3 days to be able to switch nameservers to hostgator and get started.
