Why Unsubscribe to an Inactive List?

I started a list a couple of months ago and haven't done much with it. To confess my complete ignorance regarding lists, I actually thought I had sent a few newsletters out via aWeber, but hadn't really sent them because I didn't press the queue button. After countless years of being online, I finally figured out how an autoresponder works, lol.

I got about 200 opt-ins over the last couple of months, but 23 people have unsubscribed. I can't figure out why anyone would bother to unsubscribe from a list that wasn't sending them anything. I'm not even sure how they'd be able to unsubscribe without getting emails with the unsubscribe option at the bottom.
Anyway, I'm going to be really sending out newsletters now and hope that I can retain most of my subscribers. I do understand that a certain percentage of people will unsubscribe to any list, but before they even receive anything??

Obviously, these people didn't get what they asked for.

You have answered your own question.

It's possible that those who unsubscribed were tempted by your original incentive to subscribe and when you subsequently delivered them nothing, they unsubscribed and are looking elsewhere.

It's a shame, as those unsubscribers may well have been very active people, had you treated them in the right way.

But we all live and learn.

Do that and and try to get feedback and interaction from your subscribers too - dialogue is good.

Just my thoughts and best of luck,
      Jeff.

It's just part of the process. Some people will opt in and then unsubscribe the second they get your freebie. They never intended to stay.

They're not people that you want on your list anyways so I never really sweat it.

I know it's not the right way to go about building a list. As I said, I missed a step and didn't send out what I had intended to. However, I didn't promise anyone a specific gift, only to deliver tips related to the niche.

I'm just thinking about all the lists I subscribe to. I can't imagine thinking to myself, "Let's see, last week I subscribed to List X, but they never sent me anything. I'm going to track them down and unsubscribe, so they can never send me anything in the future, in case they ever decide to!" More likely, I'd just forget about it.

I'm not upset about it. I was really just wondering about the logistics of it, and even how they went about it.
