  yes, it does...
  
  MS Office 2007 puts out DOCX format as a default which isn't compatible with previous versions... DOC is compatible with most versions of word, and openoffice.
  
  Speaking of which, I would download openoffice and use it's inbuilt PDF creator.
  
  It may not be the best solution, but it works for me.

Hi john,

Yes PDF995 works pretty well. I'm also pretty sure you can do it from openoffice, which is a free downloadable open source version of microsoft office.

I've heard that one has more options, but I've not tried it personally.

Download the trial of adobe acrobat then make sure you make enough that you can buy the whole thing by the next time you need to use it.

  Well obviously I'm biased, but I too have to give a big ole thumbs up to OpenOffice Writer.
  
  It's the best alternative to using "at cost" software comparable to MS Word. While it may not be as "advanced" as MS Word in some ways, often times the simplest solution is the best one for those just starting out creating their own PDF documents.
  
  Plus, like everyone has already said, it's F-R-E-E. What could be better than that?
  
  Oh, and I really like the "1 Click PDF" function. That's super helpful. I would give it a try and see what you think. <-- That last sentence is geared towards everyone who isn't yet using OOo Writer.

  PrimoPDF is good but the file size leaves a lot to be desired (good free option though) or OpenOffice is great. OpenOffice can open all word files and then output directly to PDF.

OK... so here's the deal...

You don't need word, but it doesn't hurt really if you8 have one...

I recommend using Open Office at http://www.openoffice.org

Along with being Free and Easy to use and fast it is also ROBUST which is something that I feel is missing from a lot of other softwares created especially for creating PDF's from other types of files.

Yea, I've been using Open Office for quite a while and it works great!

If you have lot of Word docs, simply open them up in OO's Writer program (might need to adjust a few things) and then Save As -- pdf file!

What could be easier!

It takes a bit of a learning curve to find where the tools are in OO but it's well worth the time! And there's an extensive help section on their web site, so you don't have to stumble around in the dark! [

If your pc is slow and do not want to burden it with another download like what I faced some time ago, you can use free online converter..

MS Word 2007 (part of office 2007) has built in pdf creation.

I use Adobe 7.0, however thats on my laptop.

I've also used Primopdf but it does not appear to convert embedded hyperlinks.

Anybody else have this issue? If so which free .pdf creator will allow to print embedded hyperlinks?

Hi all this will be my first post on the forum, but I usually use http://www.pdfonline.com/ to create PDF documents. You simply upload the word file and you get the the new file in your email as a PDF.

It is absolutelly free. I thought maybe you can make use of it. It does have a file size limit of 2MB so it not very good for huge books.

I too use the Google option. It's very quick if the document's not too long. But it saves every minute or so and can be a bit too frustrating at times.

The text spacing gets a bit eratic at times as well.

I've found 'DeadEasy' the best, it costs a bit, but not much, and has masses of features including audio.

No, I'm not an affiliate, I bought it a few years ago now, but it takes no time at all, and doesn't need special readers to view. (Great for E-books) Anyone interested would probably have to Google the brand name to find it.

And if you don't want the toolbar...it also installs a printer driver that lets you print directly to a pdf file. I use it on windows machines...in Linux I can convert to pdf so many ways...that it doesn't matter.

  There are many pdf creation solutions - but which ones keep all the links and URL's intact from the word doc to the PDF?
  
  I have been holding onto Adobe acro - full ver 5.x for many years as I have many customized toolbar buttons, that cannot be programatically adapted to newer versions of acrobat [thanks adobe!!!]
  
  I can generate all sorts of PDF - but I have to go back thru the doc an manually add all the links! - sucks OUTLOUD ...

For quick pdf conversions without to change the office version on the computer I second primo pdf - it is free, if you have already OpenOffice on your computer then you don't need to search for a free convert since OO can convert into pdf.

Generating pdf from word is nnow a seemingly trivial task - its the ability to embed links, make it secure and other such features that are the ebook makers friend.

Where's that? How much does it cost? Do I have to uninstall my existing Acrobat software to make it work?

Does Open Office convert the embeded links and hyperlinks too? My daughters ubuntu desktop has open office and its cool

If you have Adobe Acrobat then you do not need a converter because it does it already for you - if you have just the Adobe Reader then not. OO converts the file for you with embedding the links.

My version of acrobat [ Full Version - not reader ] Adobe Acrobat Pro 5

does not embed the links - that I can see? Perhaps I need to spend more time with distillers settings?

I use CutePDF writer as well for my PC and If you are on a Mac, it's built in the printing program.

Go to print - pdf (bottom left of print window) - save as .pdf

I use open office for the abovr but also for converting pdf's to PDP's for ebook readers,iphone,touch etc this way I can read any book word ,pdf etc on the move without a laptop,very useful for longer journeys if I'm not driving.
