what is a good method for estimating the value of a domain-name if someone is showing an interest in it?

    You ask them how much they want to pay for it.

    A domain is worth exactly that, what someone will pay for it.

    One person may pay millions for a domain that to me is worthless. It all depends what that person intends to do with it and how much it's worth to them.

    Only a name with no site?

    Domain age, pr, backlinks?

    Is the name brandable, short, memorable? Etc.. it can be in the eye of the beholder.

      the thing is, i own ultra-deal.com. the owner of ultra-deal.fr is interested.
      Now if i ask him what he would be willing to offer he would start very low, at least i would.
      He is asking me what i want for it and i want to make an offer that is reasonable yet make me get the maximum out of it...
      I dont want to scare him off by asking too much.
      Its only a domain name but he is already ranking nr in google for the keywords:
      ultra deal and ultra-deal
      the keyword ultradeal has extremely low competition and should place him in rank 1 also.
      .com names that make sense and have the world deal in it are all taken

        You and you alone have to decide what you will take for the domain and make the offer. It is only worth what he will pay and you don't know what he will pay, if anything.

        Low competition is not valid for estimating a domain. In fact, low competition could mean that it's low competition for a reason ... no searches.

    There isn't an exact answer of your question.

    It's always negotiatable.

    Cheers

    Ask them to make an offer and see what they're thinking of. If not, it's a crap shoot. Just pull a figure that you want and negotiate from there, because the domain is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

      Agreed, but try multiply it by 2 or 3, since an offer usually just about 40% - 60% they willing to pay.

    Depends on many things: domain age, the number of one way links, number of visits, whether it is in DMOZ directory ...

    It's best to see the prices of similar sites, and on this basis to appoint a price.

    Thanks for the reports. Seems negotiation is the prime key. John.

    I don't want to be seen as a premanent skeptic (ok - I am, I know that). But. Are you sure this is a genuine offer and not a scammer trying it on?

    You can use a website valuation website like ivaluesites.com. this site will generate a value and give information such as backlinks pr and website visitor stats.

      Automated estimating software is not accurate. As an example, it just estimated Google's worth at 2.2 Billion. Do you really think that Google would let Google go for a paltry 2.2B? Not likely.

    ok i did some research:

    google results for the keywords:
    keyword: competion searches
    ultra deal 0,32 3600 3600
    [ultra deal] 0,09 590 590
    "ultra deal" 0,14 1000 1000
    ultradeal 0,29 260 260
    [ultradeal] 0,3 110 110
    "ultradeal" 0,25 140 140
    ultra-deal 0,32 3600 3600
    [ultra-deal] 0,09 590 590
    "ultra-deal" 0,14 1000 1000
    [ultradeal] 0,3 110 110
    "ultradeal" 0,25 140 140
    [ultra deal] 0,09 590 590
    "ultra deal" 0,14 1000 1000

    total 12730 organic search/month

    the potential buyer is ranked #1 for the keywords, and it looks like he has a solid and healthy company..

    on godaddy .com domains with "deal" in the name are not anymore available.
    some examples of premium domains:
    TopDeals.org = €6,964.78
    dealday.org = €3,235.46
    ---
    stimator - topdeals . org = $1,075
    dealday.org = $1081
    ultra-deal.com = $1072

    so i guess € 5,300 is very reasonable , so i offer to sell it for € 7,740 ?

    or is this totally unrealistic? I dont normally trade in domain names, but i have to many domains registered right now and too little time...

    Give it a shot. Sounds high to me, but like I said ... the domain is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If they say no, ask for a counter offer.
