Any Tips/Suggestions/Experiences for Networking When You Have a Day Job???

Hi Warriors!

For those of you that have used (or are currently using) PAID coaching/mentoring programs: how have you dealt with attending live events when you have a day job???

Grrrr! I am sooo frustrated right now!

I received an unexpected payment this week (Yay!) and would like to enroll in a particular coaching program for 2012.

HOWEVER, the program requires travel to at least 2 (probably 3) live events in TX. I have a relatively new (4 mo.) day job.

I can request time off, but there's no guarantee I'll get it. The first event is in Feb. and I'll be submitting my request for the time off on Monday. Either I get it off or I don't. The other 2 events have unknown dates at this time. (One event is a half-day of one-on-one coaching and I'm trying to see if we can tack it at the end of the Feb. event so I only have to make one trip.)

It's sooo frustrating to actually have the money to enroll in a coaching program, but possibly be unable to do so because of a day job! It's an expensive coaching program and non-refundable, which is understandable.

I have the same problem when trying to attend local networking/mentoring events like my local Glazer-Kennedy Insider Circle (GKIC) meetings. I can't do it because I'm working when they meet!!!

Arrgggh!

I'm not really big on networking or attending live events, but I'm at a place now where I really feel the need to be in a group of other like-minded entrepreneurs. (Groups which require you to pay to play, not the free events.)

As we all know, direct marketing and IM events are VERY different from just the run-of-the-mill Chamber of Commerce events. Chamber of Commerce events are of no use to me. GKIC or other specific events are VERY useful to me.

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to work in a vacuum. And I really feel the need for the feedback/guidance of a coach at this stage. This is NOT about just getting out of the house and socializing. It's about specific coaching/networking for my direct marketing/IM business.

For those of you who have invested in PAID programs with live events, how did you deal with this????

Just to be clear, I'm NOT asking whether I should invest with my mentor or in the program. She's worth it and I have the money. Making the decision to work with her and invest is done. I've worked with her before and really like her work.

It would be slightly different if it were just one event. I'd just ask the powers that be at my job ahead of time. But the program includes 3 live events (two of them with unknown dates) and is expensive enough that I won't enroll if I'm not able to go since the events are the meat of the coaching program.

I have NO idea if this will work out for 2012. But it makes me sick to know that I need it, I have the money, and I STILL might not be able to do it because of a day job!

I'm just asking for your experiences, I guess, in how you dealt with this. Maybe just commiserating?

If I were in your shoes, I'd bring it up with the employer and get an idea if this is something that might cost you your job. Also find out if they have temporary people in place to fill in for special occasions like this.

I'd also contact the event people, and ask what they "think" might be the estimated time of the events.

Then is is a simple matter of if your employer says they will work with your rough schedule or if you might need to look for another job.

It also boils down to "How important is attending this event to the growth of your personal business" and "What sacrifices can you afford."
