Best day of the week to email your list?

I am going to send a promotion to my list. What day of the week is best to send it out to get maximum responsiveness or opens?

Generally stats come back with Tuesday-Thursday as the best days. But Marketing Experiments just discovered they could increase open rates by sending overnight--which goes against past research and conventional wisdom, so it really does just depend.

One thing to consider is who your subscribers are. Mine are mostly solo business owners, and my regular newsletter goes out on Tuesdays. So I do promos on Thursdays, either mid-morning or mid-afternoon. It gives them a day break, plus I think they're a little more relaxed than earlier in the week. Mid morning or mid afternoon is to try to catch them at natural break times--or at least be waiting for them if they're one of those super-organized "I only check my email 3 times a day" types.

I have been tracking my own emailing now for 6 years and these are the best
to worst days that I have personally found.

      Tuesday
      Monday
      Wednesday
      Thursday
      Friday
      Saturday
      Sunday

I don't know if these days are universally true but they are what they are
for my own personal results and have been steady like this for 6 years.

I assume there is a reason for it, though I haven't bothered to try to
understand what it is. I just know what works for me.

I agree with Tracy. Tues & Thursdays are best. My list is also responsive on Sunday afternoons. I find that email subject titles are very important to get people to read your e-mails.

I've been mailing to the same list for about 5 years now and I get about 25% more click thru's if I mail on Tues or Wed. It's an entertainment niche though and most of these people are working Friday, Saturday and Sunday...and playing catch up Monday.

For me, personally, I am most in the "buy" mode on a Friday night when I have nothing to do, around 10pm. I get bored and start clicking around. If someone sent me an e-mail with a project I could start, I'd jump on it if I had the cash.

I agree with Tracy in that you should consider who your subscribers are. Other things to take into consideration are the price of the product and the product itself. Sending an e-mail blast to insomniacs about Ambien might do better at 3am than at 6pm.

Well, here's my take on it....

For Steve his worst day is Sunday, but that just happens to be a good day for me to send a message.

I think a lot of it has to do with your relationship with your list and the frequency you send out messages to your list.

    Here's why:

It all starts with conditioning your list to expect your emails X number of days apart. Of course it also depends on what you send them.

For instance, if you were getting emails every day, sometimes several times a day about the latest wiz-bang and how great it is then you'd be unsubscribing faster than you could say your kids names... right?

But, what if you were receiving an email every day that had such valuable information in it that actually helped you and kept you accountable?

I'll bet you'd stay on a list like that...

So, it all comes down to your relationship with your list, the content you send them and the frequency you have established already.

I know this really doesn't answer your question but it will get you thinking about the people on your list and see if you actually know them. If not, I'd suggest you send them a survey and ask them what they want and when.

Mike, this is true, and I have a great relationship with my list as I don't email that often and when I do, it's important.

Having said that, emailing them on a Sunday is a waste of my time. These
people, for whatever reason, don't check their emails until Monday or
Tuesday. Maybe they're out on Sunday getting away from making money.

And yes, that can be a big part of it. If you're in a recreational niche, like
golf, maybe those people will look forward to your Sunday golf tips. I
      don't know, but it's possible.

But yes, if you have a lousy relationship with your list, it won't matter
      when you email them.

You want to mail to your list the day the prospect opted-in. For example, if you have a prospect that opted-in on tuesday at 6:30p.m., you want to try to market to them at the same time.

The problem is, this is impossible to do. If you have a list of thousands of
people, you're going to have people that have opted in almost every day
of the week. There is no way, that I know of, to send out a followup email
based on day they opted in.

Unless somebody knows of some software that I am unaware of.

Good point - I've unsubscribed to a few newsletters that weren't useful for anything but learning how NOT to write newsletters. That or thrown them in the "send to spam" filter because I was too lazy to unsubscribe.

I still read a few...those that give me a LOT of value.

I think a lot of people are very selective, especially now.

Jenna you will never truly know until you test.

Start with Tue or Wed, but try other days too.

Test to find out. Every niche is different. Some people may be more available on the weekends, others might want to use the Tuesday-Thursday thing.

I personally stick to Tuesday-Thursday, but honestly, I change it up a bit quite often.

      Thanks for the help.

I was thinking tuesday too, as i wanted to avoid weekends (people not using the net, if they need a work computer etc), fridays - holiday mode, mondays - email will get buried in stuff received over the weekend. So Tuesday/Wednesdays it is.

Yeah many have been saying Tuesday is the best day to email and to launch a product.

On a side note, is there a way to set auto-responders (Aweber or GetResponse) to send the series every Tuesdays instead of the day offset from day of signup?

I think there are so many variations, it all comes down to geo-targeting.

Someone in LA is available all 7 days for business..because that is Southern California...non-stop.

Someone in eastern Nova Scotia is available Monday-Friday, and if you email on Sunday, they send the priest after you to pardon you for your sins.

If you email someone right now in Singapore, they are having Chinese New Year...and are partying with family all the time.

There are so many opinions on this.

Do what I do...if you got great content that adds value, send it out...even once per day..if it is good and ads value.
