Dark background vs Light Ones

Hello Fellow Warriors, I really need your opinion here.

Just Visit my blog Vast9 — Blogging Tips, Earning Money Online, Web 2.0 and please tell what you (as a regular user and not a marketer) thinks about the dark background ? Though the content is on white background, but the site background is dark (greyish).

Some people says, dark background sucks, but I am not sure if they are right. See for yourself, do you feel comfortable (and enjoy) reading there ? Or you feel like It should have a Light Background.

Please share your views here. Its not just about my blog, but every blogs in general.

I think that light backgrounds work well for content oriented sites, and darker backgrounds work well for more visual sites (photoblogs and so on). Your blog looks fine, and nice way of gaining traffic ;].

Totally. I've read of one study that in most cases users preferred a light background and dark print. Dark backgrounds with white print do freaky things to my eyes after a short time. Don't know why. Could be just me, though.

The main thing is that we blink. My eye doc said that people tend to blink a lot less when they are online (gazing in amazement, concentration, hypnotized, or something) and the blinking reflex is altered. Eyes tend to tear up after awhile if they get too dried.

Hey, a little off topic, but had to blink a few times after going from dark/light backgrounds and back.

Thanks LegacyLewis for your advice. Yes I see that dark background is good for photography and other fun type sites, but in my blog, I don't have a dark background on the content or the sidebar but the rest of the browser window is dark in color. The following screenshot of my blog will make you clear :

The area pointed by arrows is dark in color and I am talking about that. DO it look good ? DO it effect the readability ? Do it enhance or deteriorate user experience ?

And also it was not a way to gain traffic from this forum, however it can be a good way though

Looks okay - would look more inviting with a light background though, imho.

    Cheers,

As a user, I like it. I'm into neutral colors. The thing that caught me off guard was the size of the font. I'm not used to seeing it that big on a blog. I also don't get your domain name.

I think it looks decent enough, and I've seen a lot of sites with colors that dark. It isn't unpleasant to me.

It looks fine but I never recommend dark background to anyone unless their website is focused on graphics, photoshop tutorials, youtube stuff etc.

It is quite repellent to most people online. Use a light background. Dark ones give an "underground" kind of a feeling.

Text on a dark background needs to be larger and bolder than on a light background, and sans-serif is preferable.

Most cited tests of light/dark used the same font, size, and weight on both backgrounds, which puts the dark background at a significant disadvantage when you use the standard fonts, sizes, and weights established for print publications - since they're normally on light backgrounds.

That's pretty much the whole problem with dark backgrounds. Keep it in mind, and you can make dark backgrounds and light backgrounds look good.

    From a personal standpoint...

The first thing which happened to my eyes when I visited your site is they were instantly drawn to your content since it was in the white background. In other words, it focused my attention.

The second thing which caught my attention is, Why do you think I'm blind? Your fonts are large everywhere, in the posts, in the headers, in your menus...That is annoying..

    Remember...that is personal opinion..as a reader.

The primary consideration when offering actual content that you want and expect people to read is to make it easy on the eyes. I see no problems with the appeal of the blog as you have it formatted at the present time. The background did not distract me from the writing and that is important.

Thanks RobKonrad and rrm for sharing your views.

I clicked on the site 3 times and got the message "out of memory at line:1"' hope it means something to you. I don't have a clue.
Sue Bruce I can't believe that and I will never believe that. That might be a problem with your local connection, cause I have set up downtime alerts for each minute and there was none.

Thanks Miguelito203 for your review. However, I don't see why some of the users are complaining of the font size here. DO it really look bad ? Moreover, to me it is not at all that big, Is it ?
Moreover, The domain has nothing to do with the niche I am in (you are right here). But I am more into building a brand and uniqueness of some sort so I choose that. Also, I bought it 2 years ago and then I was not fond of keyword rich domains.

    Thanks Lloyd Buchinski

Raindance I agree with you but The background I am talking about is not the content or sidebar background but the rest of it as you can get from the pic I posted in the previous reply. And yes, the dark color works best on photography or fun sites. The pic I posted above was uploaded by me to imgur. I shifted to imgur from tinypic long ago just because there dark color soothes my mind while uploading

CDarklock Thanks for your advice, but you didn't mentioned whether you liked that background on my blog or not

Barry Unruh Thanks for your kind words : "The first thing which happened to my eyes when I visited your site is they were instantly drawn to your content since it was in the white background. In other words, it focused my attention."

That lines gives me a lot of satisfaction

But for the font size, as I posted above, I can't feel it is really big. Is it ? Please confirm because I really can't see it that big
