questioni on copyrights for pictures and videos

How do I figure out if a picture or video I find is ok or not ok to be put on my site. For example, if I found a funny youtube video, how would I know if it was copywritted or not. Also, if I find a youtube that is posted by a lot of different people, could I redo the website and add my link in the video?

All pictures and videos are subject to the laws of copyright.

If you don't own the copyright, someone else does.

Unless you buy a license to use them, or unless the site on which you find them specifies clearly that they're available for reproduction without payment, you can't use them. (And even then, if it turns out that the site was mistaken and misinformed you, you can still be liable later, if the true copyright owner finds out).

There are many sites which have a limited range of pictures which can be used freely, and charge very low prices for re-print rights to thousands of others.

The basic answer is "read the license" - is there a link outlining reuse conditions? If not, assume the content is under copyright and ask for permission. Then abide by the answer.

As for YouTube, if the video has the embed feature enabled you can embed it on your site (check the TOS, it's your friend in these matters)

Could you redo the webiste and add your link in the video? Check the terms, but probably not. Last time I checked, YT allowed embedding using their code, not copying, altering and reposting.

Unless the content is explicitly placed in the public domain, copywrite is established as soon as the content is placed in fixed form (i.e., published on a web page, burned to a CD or printed to a page).
