Privacy policy ( duplicate content)

Hey Warriors,

I hear alot about duplicate content but I noticed most of the websites that we create we use the free privacy policy templates, don't you think Google see that as duplicate content? after all the algorithm is calculated by computers and not humans.. so I was wondering if I should use a template or write my own or outsource it for 10$

Thanks

You can make that page "no-index" if it worries you. Also make all links to the privacy page "no-follow".

Thanks, I can do that but from what I heard is Google "loves" or respects sites with privacy policies since it shows that the owner is concerned.. it is a myth but it makes sense.. so I don't know if I should get someone to do it..

Good point - and good solution! I'll make sure I add those pages where I don't already have them - and make them no-follow/no-index.

        Thanks!

I think you should let Google index your privacy policy as I mentioned before it gives more trust and shows that it is a legit site..imo..

I would suggest that you just use no-index as suggested since the privacy policy is more of one of those pages you just need to have on your website, not necessarily one that needs to be indexed.

Dont use the free one. It has errors that could cost you.

Lookup Bryan Kindsvator on the forum. He is an attorney and has a membership site that provides them.

That site offers a lot more for 1k. Really, PM him. I think he offers just the privacy on the cheap.

It wont be an issue for duplicate content.

    Not at all!

Google even recommends you to have a duplicate Privacy Policy and supports the PP generators.

I've read that somewhere as well. I think it was in the Webmaster tools PDF.

No doubt Google treats things such as privacy policies, terms of use and other such content differently then the main content of your site. The main concern with such pages is do they cover you legally as this is the reason they are there.

Duplicate ocntent is not an issue - it mean (to google) repeating the same page on your site over and over. It's an old term that was used to describe a method you won't see used today.

The same page on your site that appears on a separate site is not duplicate content to google.

Correct me if am wrong here, but I thought duplicate content affects content that you want to rank?

Since you have no need of getting the privacy policy on SERPs, I don't think it is an issue. The only problem I'd think of is if it covers you in case some clever guy wanted to sue you!

I use the same privacy policy page on several of my sites and have had no problems with rankings so I'm not so sure that it would be a big issue.

Hi, I'm pretty sure dupllicate content that google refers to is you having the same content multiple times in your site.. Like you have 3 pages containing all the same thing. I don't think its about having content others already have.. I've had pages of amazon products ranking only with the same content copied from amazon itself.

Up until the Google Panda update in early 2011 duplicate content and any penalty related to it did indeed relate to content duplicated on a single domain and not across different domains.

But post-Panda, Google have made it clear that they are now against the same content appearing on different sites too and will (as far as their algorithm is able) rank only the first instance that they find. Whether that 'first instance' is the first one they happen to see, or the first on to have been posted is a moot point.

However, as far as I am aware, having content on your site that Google thinks is duplicated is not against any rules and the only penalty that is likely to be imposed is that the page in question will not be ranked. Unless your site is comprised of a majority of such re-used content, having a page or two that don't get indexed (or more accurately, ranked) is neither here nor there and won't affect the reputation or authority of the rest of your pages.

To clear up another misunderstanding that I'm seeing here, putting a no-index, no-follow tag on your privacy page does not hide it from Google - Google can 'see' every page on your site that is reached by a link. All the no-index, no-follow thing does is tells Google how to treat your page. It doesn't stop them from knowing about your page, it stops them from ranking it - and is seen by Google to be a courtesy.

So, to cut a long answer a bit shorter: by all means use a privacy policy that appears on other sites - so long as you don't copy it without permission (that would breach copyright). And don't be tempted to rewrite it to make it 'unique' because firstly you don't need to, and secondly, rewriting legalese is a tricky business if you are not trained. Changing an odd word or nuance can render the whole thing legally meaningless if you are not careful.

Do use a legitimately sourced privacy policy and do set it to be no-index, no-follow.

Use the free generators available and create one. You don't need to fret a lot on privacy policy if you are confident enough that you are not breaking any laws.
