Hi All, This isn't a rant or complaint, I'm just curious. Strange as it might sound to some, I can't remember ever having a chargeback before today. Today I got one through Clickbank, for a purchase that was made about 3 months ago (Nov 4th, 2008). Since chargebacks are done through the credit card companies themselves, does anyone know how that works? Do credit card companies put any limits on people doing this? In other words, if someone decided 6 months or a year down the road that they needed money or funds on their card, could they just go through and file chargebacks for old purchases? Yes I'm also a bit strange in that I don't believe in using credit cards, so I don't have my own to look up details on ![]() Thanks, Kathy |

I've seen some come in 5 or 6 months after the purchase. There is supposed to be a time limit, but it seems to depend on which employee is in that day. When it's Clickbank, you can't really do anything but accept it. |

It depends on the bank/creditcard the buyer used. Some banks allow their creditcard holders to go for a chargeback up to one year. As far as I know there is no role for third party PPs. . |

I use 2checkout.com for one of my websites as the payment gateway and have had a chargeback as far back as 6 months. They explained to me each credit card company has their own terms. As radhika mentioned, some allow chargebacks up to a year later which is rediculous in my opinion.

I have had people come to CLASSES in my classroom, sign in for all of the classes, take all of the material, and then 3 months or even 5 months later request a chargeback. AND EVEN AFTER I sent Paypal or whoever all of the documentation, the chargeback STILL goes through. SUCKS. |

Six months seems to be the limit for most major credit companies here but a few may allow even longer. Used to be that it might be 60 days before the charge showed on your bill - with online access now you can view what is going to be billed but the time limits haven't changed. I think sometimes people see 2checkout and have no idea what it is and forget what they purchased. To do a chargeback the person must usually fill out a form and give the reason. Then it takes some time for the company to process it. They used to contact the seller to answer the complaint if seller felt chargeback was unwarranted but not sure that's still done now. kay |

Odd... I was under the impression that there's nothing any payment processing company could do about it, but I had no idea it could happen that far into the future. Seems like that would be a ripe area for abuse, particularly these days with people having so many financial problems. On a related note, I noted CB gave me a "penalty charge" for this. That's annoying since there's not a thing either they or I can do about it. But I went to see how much this penalty was... $18 Have to admit that peeves me a bit. Does PayPal and other processors hit you with charges like that when someone does a chargeback? |

Actually it's interesting you'd say that... I was surprised to get a few chargebacks like 4-5 months later! :P

Visa and Mastercard allow chargebacks up to a year. Under special conditions, they can chargeback even longer.
