Going from #3 to #1 in Google

I have several keywords that are between #3-#6 on page 1 in Google, and want to try to get to #1. What's my best strategy?

My site has been around about 8 years and has a lot of backlinks.
I haven't done a lot of article marketing.
I haven't implemented a back linking strategy, or even hired a Philippino to do some basic banklinking.

I'm trying to figure out where to start with this, because it's not your typical "I have a brand new niche site and want to rank" problem.

Whatever your website, just do relevant backlinking. As well as, try to collect some authority backlinks those can't beat by paid links. That's it.

You've answered yourself. Try article marketing, some backlinking strategy (I'd recommend quality not quantity) perhaps even blog commenting for some High PR backlinks. Essentially you are going to have to out do no.1

Also check out the #1 spot and see what differs from your site, how many backlinks, title, on page keywords etc. Then just improve on the areas that you are lacking in comparison to the top rankers.

      Hi,
Whenever i reach on the top 5 positions , i always consider the content as compared to the offsite seo strategies. Just be sure that you have good content as compared to the other top sites. Improving the content if needed will take you to the top in 1 month without any offline work.

      Reason?
When you reach page 1 , the main factor on which your ranking depends becomes the time people spend on your site(or any inner page).
People always spend more time on a site having good content and good look.

Thanks! You mean offsite not offline right?
My site that's ranking highly is my sales letter page, and my blog with all the content is typically about a page behind. I'm not sure whether to run with the blog site and try to get that one to rank or keep working on the sales letter site.

build some strong contextual links mate - try a few private blog networks, always blast it with a hell of a lot of bookmarks, this wont do any damage and has been working well lately, dont spam it with sb blog comments though lol

You really answered yourself already. Besides what you mentioned, try content creation... that should be obvious though

Keep adding content regularly, and make it original. Also, at this point you want to write for the visitor, not the search engines. Don't worry so much about specific keyword densities, you'll accomplish that naturally by writing on your subject. You want to make sure that many of your visitors spend time on your site.

Also, start backlinking, and try to make those backlinks come from prevalent sources. Many are saying that the relevant backlink is holding much more weight now than the irrelevant backlink.
