Product based website setup

Hi all,
I like to create websites that sell multiple products within the same niche and i'm trying to figure out what the better approach is from a conversion standpoint to create more clicks to visit the merchants I am promoting for.

What I do now: I add about 300 words of text to a page and then display all of the products below. When the product is clicked they are taken directly to the merchant page for that product.

Problem: Most people when they want to buy products are not interested in reading how great the product is but would rather get more specific details. If I search for New york Yankees hat, I am not interested in reading about why I should choose a Yankees hat. I feel like by having lots of text above my products that users will bounce away.

I was just curious what others thought. Would it be better if I placed a bit of text at the first of each page, followed by my clickable products and then a description of each below?
Hope I make some sense .
Thanks!

With all the Panda changes and updates it's getting more and more difficult to target product and brand keywords in Affiliate Marketing. You hit the nail on the head when you said:

"Most people when they want to buy products are not interested in reading how great the product is but would rather get more specific details."

That's why Google would preferably show a merchant site over an affiliate site. I'm still finding that the sites and pages which do best are those which allow customer/product reviews, have at least 5/600 words of unique content and are clear and very well structured. You can list products below the fold but make sure there's an obvious link/call to action which allows users to jump to that link.

What you don't want is users bouncing off your site, you want them there for as long as possible, preferably 2 minutes or more.

Video content is also a great way to get users to stay on your site.

      Thanks for the advice everyone!

I wanted to ask about this statement:

With all the Panda changes and updates it's getting more and more difficult to target product and brand keywords in Affiliate Marketing.
Is this true? I have found that I can get to a certain point but am having more trouble getting some of the top rankings on branded keywords (for example nike running shoes - not my niche). I have found that nike would occupy the first position followed by a couple other ecommerce sites and then me. Is this the norm now? Should I start looking into non branded keyword such as simply running shoes?

      Thanks!

I own Shirakura now available in North America and am ranked #4, 5, 6, 7, and 8

The site did VERY well and you can take a look at it and see the ins and outs. The bad part was that I could no longer support the product line (thus the sold out signs everywhere).

In your case what I would do is rely on brand name recognition. Create 1 site per product, with a mini link wheel pointing to the other sites.

    just my opinion TIFWIW

You are smart to ask this question at this stage of your product website development!

I recommend a small bit of text at the top of the page and some more robust text at the bottom of the page. Try to keep your products 'above the fold' but you have to have some valuable text so figure out some place for it.

Also be aware that some ecommerce products or database products are not very SEO-Friendly which will permanently handicap your site. I don't have specific product recommendations but make sure your shopping cart (if you're using a shopping cart product) is SEO friendly before moving forward. With a good SEO-friendly shopping cart you'll get much better results in organic search.
