membership site vs dvd series which would you make?

Hello fellow warriors

I know that this forum has some of the most brilliant marketers on the planet, that is why I am reaching out to you on this one.
I was thinking of launching a dvd series(physical product) for a particular niche, I did some research and there where only 3 available courses that where close to what I had in mind two where dvd video courses and the other an ebook.

I went out and shot some video and was surprised at how much info I actually had on the subject so cutting it down to x amount of minutes for one or two dvd was going to be hard (BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE)with so much info at hand.

I got to thinking last night what if I made this a membership site instead of a physical product or even a downloadable course.

My question to you since I dont have any experience building and/or running membership sites is what is the cost including software templates and so on for running a membership site. compared to a downloadable dvd course.
Also any and all advice regarding memberships sites is welcome.

p.s.All most forgot how to get affiliates/manage affiliates?

Thank you for reading

    Hi,

I would do both. Setup the main product as a membership site and offer the physical version DVD's as an upsell. Essentially the same product, but you would be surprised how much that could add to your bottom line.

Check out AMember, a system for membership sites that also allows you to turn your members into affiliates and integrates well with Wordpress.

I would do them both but separately. Memberships sites have the benefit of continuity income, where you sell once and earn as long as they remain a member.

A physical DVD series has the benefit of being more tangible and you can make a larger up front amount.

For membership web sites, I agree that WordPress is definitely the way to go. My latest membership web site is done that way and it is a lot easier to manage and update.

    1. Sell the DVD for a high price. Then later offer the same content as a membership.
    2. Create a DVD set that offers some of the content then offer the rest as an upgrade later to buyers. Or use it as a online bonus.

Then Later, rebrand it and offer the content as a drip feed membership.

Then even later, sell rights to it and/or sell premade sites. Then even later, sell PLR.

I get the feeling that by "dvds" you mean just downloadable videos. Right? And not physical DVD's shipped to their home.

That is how I am reading it anyways.

If that is the case then it becomes a matter of whether you want them to have the whole package at once, or over time.

I would test it out. Setting up a membership site isnt that hard anymore. Take a look at DAP (digitalaccesspass), the owner is a member here. It is very cheap for what it does - and it does about everything.

So you can test charging for a 1 time purchase - where they get everything against a monthly membership scenario.

Then test some different prices. Because, nstead of charging, lets say $197 one time, you might be able to charge $47 per month for 6 months. Meaning you make an extra $100 (if they stay all 6 months). But test out other prices as well.

Or you could just do it as a monthly course, for a 1 time fee. So they pay one time, but you control how and when they see the content.

Like others have mentioned, testing will allow your customers to show you which choice is more profitable.

I suppose it depends on the particular niche, but I think some consumers perceive an online video as somehow less valuable than a DVD they might get delivered from FedEx. Maybe it's an age-related thing, I don't know. All the free videos on Youtube certainly can't help in this regard.

Aside from the physical vs digital comparison, I've noticed in my product niche -- which is 100% digital -- that customers place more value on information they download and save to their computers, than from information they access from a secure webpage. It's just a perception issue, I think.

      .
Thanks for the reply and I will definitely look into DAP
sorry if I was a little confusing but I meant physical dvds like a three disc set 45 min to an hour each dvd.
It cost very little and these can be made once the sales have occurred so no inventory problems IF they dont sell. BTW has anyone used Ejunkie for the downloadables? if so can you recommend.

p.s. also you mention split testing this can be done with DAP? or do I have to set up differently
      thank for your reply

Forget DVD's. All you need is a WordPress site, aWeber and use Viddler's membership option.

Then, instead of spending your time with DVD's, use that time to market your offer everywhere.

If your videos take off and you make a few bucks you can always re-visit the DVD option.

The idea is to get selling right now and you can do that "right now" with Viddler/PayPal.

      It can be 100% automated.
