From Softgoods to Hardgoods - New Obstacles to Overcome

I've always been amazed at how easily someone can set up a full-functioning ecommerce business on the Web, and essentially be in business and making sales within just a few days. Of course I'm primarily talking about selling things like ebooks and other digital content, where all you really need (at a minimum) is a website and a paypal or clickbank account.

However, a few months ago I decided that I'd like to expand my business, and become a retailer for several hard-good products related to my niche. It didn't take me long to discover I was entering unfamiliar territory, where things can take literally months to sort out and resolve before I can even think about making a sale. Things like:

1) Getting a Fed Tax ID Number,
2) Getting a retail license (in the state where you operate the business).
3) Getting a line of credit established with vendors.

When I found out how long it can take just to cover these three basic requirements, I was in shock. For example, it takes my state 4-6 weeks just to send me an application for the retail license -- which I'll need before I can set up a line of credit with a vendor -- which I'll need as a reference source before I can approach wholesalers to buy products.

Does anyone have experience going through these initial steps of setting up an online retail store? i just can't believe how long this process will likely take.
Any advice appreciated.
