Many Wordpress Blogs On One Domain

I don't know much about SQL or Databases, so I have a question for someone who does.

What kind of problems might I expect if I were to have many different wordpress installations under one parent domain?

i.e.

mydomain/blog1 (stand alone wordpress)

mydomain/blog2 (stand alone wordpress

etc etc.

Again, I can't really see any problems with that, but I know next to nothing about this type of stuff.

oh, I use Hostmonster / cPanel

Thanks for any tips or advice

You won't have a problem with databases clashing, etc, since when you install WP you can specify what database to use. The only thing you could run into is overloading the server - but that would require you to have many successful sites that were all getting huge amounts of traffic. And if that was the case you'd probably move to a dedicated server, split sites across different servers, etc.

    Cheers,
    Jason

Got to agree with Jason - no problems - but I've got to wonder why you'd run different blogs under the same main domain.

If they're on different subjects you could just get another domain name for a few dollars and add it to your Hostgator account as an add-on domain.

alright thanks for the help guys.

As for why I would want different ones on the same domain:

I am working on a new semi-auto blogging technique, and for SEO and other reasons, I am going to create different wordpress blogs for different sub-niches.

I will be buying different domains for very different things, but, for example, I want to do something like

    Movies:
    blog1- action movies
    blog2- drama
    blog3- comedy

you get the idea. all of those would be under the "movies" but each sub-niche would have a different dedicated wordpress blog.

I would of course get different domains for different main niche categories.

If you want to do that you can also do it on one domain and one blog installation. just create different categories and call them for example "action movies", "drama" etc. Then you can change your permalinks to show category/postname, so you can have something like
      domain.com/action-movies/indianajones

    Hey Simms,

I definitely planned on that, Thanks.

I just didn't know if having them all under the same parent domain would give me troubles with my hosting if I were to have as many as 10 or 20 different sub-domains with wordpress installations on them.

As long as you will keep track of what databases you used for each blog (eg: blog1->db1, blog2->db2) you won't have any problem.

Use Wordpress MU : WordPress MU Home - one install, as many independent wordpress blogs as you can think of content for.
