Thinking about coming back to IM

Hey all,

I've taken a break from IM while I was studying and taking a few certification exams in my career. I used to have a blog up and going, but I didn't really make much at all. I have about $10 from adsense from the time my blog was up. The blog was up for approximately 2 months, and about 24 articles (I've written them myself) and some screen shots on each article.

Now that I've gotten the certs out of the way, I'm ready to try to start making some real profit in IM without any side distractions. Since then, I've deleted my blog because things were moving very slow. I'm not sure if it was the just the niche I had chose (pc support) being extremely competitive, or if I just didn't put enough time/effort into my blog.

All I really know about SEO from what I see so much is just creating a blog, doing keyword research, writing a long 400-500 word article using the keyword a few times, posting some backlinks on other higher PR blogs, and just rinse and repeat the next day or two. I have a strong background in IT, so any blog related to my career would probably go a lot smoother for me.

That method was very slow for me, and I probably had about 50 unique visitors a day or so, not quite sure. Anyways, I'm reading a lot back on this thread and trying to collect some ideas to what I know already. Do I know enough to make progress and just wasn't patient enough or what? I used to write an article every day for my blog (except weekends) for about a month straight, and got bored when I realized even after a month I wasn't making anything.

I do work in IT on a daily 9hr shift, but being 20, the years are moving slow and the progress/pay is gradually increasing at a slow rate. Considering I have so much idle time outside of work and my gf, I would like to put some of the time to use and try to make some extra profit. I don't have any problem being patient, but I'm very strict about wasting it, so I like to be sure that whatever I'm doing WILL lead me somewhere.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The Internet is in the middle of a seismic shift. The rules are being re-written again by Google and everything is about to change in your favor.

In the old days it was all about content and on-page SEO. Then came backlinks, and people could rank pages without any textual content on them. Now it's coming around to on-page content again with some 'special terms and conditions'. You need authority but not under the old Page Rank system. The old PR gave you results based on the quantity of your backlinks, the new authority system gives you results based on the quality of your backlinks and the quality of your website content.

So now there are two parameters which will determine how well you do. To some of us, it's never been any different, but to others, who've wandered down a certain path, it's about to come to a sticky end.
So as long as you're willing to play by the rules and you know what they are, you can do well with a blog, some good backlinks and some good content.
You'll also want to throw social media activity into the mix, though I suspect this is due a major upheaval too.
Be careful not to get drawn into the countless 'advice' threads you see around here (ignore mine too if you wish
Use common sense. If you're religious, just ask yourself "what would Google do?" and you'll be ok.
