How the Heck Do You Focus?

Hey friends,

Things are going pretty well for me, with one rather large exception...

They say that the worst thing that can happen to you in Vegas is that you actually win big... because then you become hooked, forever chasing the adrenaline rush that came with your jackpot.

I kinda sorta feel the same way with IM.

In a way, my problem is not that internet marketing doesn't work. It's that it works too well. There are LOADS of ways to make money. And I've tried them all... successfully.

I've just never been able to stick with one thing exclusively, to the point of mastering it and turning it into a respectable income...

And I've got the $120 a month from Clickbank, $95 a month from Adsense, $35 a month from Squidoo, and $57 a month from Amazon - all after 3 years of effort - to prove it!

My question is, how do you more successful warriors keep yourselves from dabbling, see your projects through to completion, and keep the faith that by doing so, your results will be far greater?

Gracias.

For me, having multiple concrete reasons why I want to reach new goals keeps me going.

I constantly reflect and appreciate reaching each new milestone. Set very high goals, and do everything you can to reach them. Once you reach them, set higher goals.

Concentrate on one method for a long period of time, like a few days, a week, or a month. I've had the same problem with trying to maintain several website and diluting my work. Not good!

If you have to, pay for someone to write articles for you, get backlinks for you, etc. Sometimes you cant do it all on your own.

Focus is a skill that can be developed with effort, you just have to keep chipping away at it and rewire the brain

It hasn't (and still isn't always) easy for me to focus, but I have made leaps and bounds compared to when I started IM about 2 and a half years ago. I think that learning to focus on work while in your own home with all the distractions that come with being at home, is something that spills over into everything in your life. I have found this to be the case, your focus increases 'across the board'.

My #1 personal motivation is that I don't like working for other people just to make them more wealthy and I just get a standard wage each month, from which I can barley save a thing. Also, it is very hard for me to do something I don't agree with, and you have to make those compromises when you have a boss. So I just bare those things in mind, and it is good fuel, enough actually that I am making a full time living on line and IM is now my job - and I LOVE IT!

So when I think I can't write one more articles for my websites, or for backlinking, or whatever other tasks come up, I just remind myself of how much worse a JOB is, and that makes me feel a bunch better.

I also keep a rotating pictures for desktop background of things that inspire me and things that I want to buy with the money I make - such as a monolithic dome home and the new Volvo plug-in hybrid that come out next year.

Just think about what is in your life that you don't like, and how making more money online can change that, and use that as your fuel. It gets easier the more you work on it!

It it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Seriously though, that's a fairly unique problem to have. Did you feel that you reached your ceiling with those methods and had to venture out or did you just have a case of "the grass is greener on the other side"?

That's a good question. I'd have to say it is closer to the grass being greener.

It's actually a pretty neurotic approach I take.

      In a nutshell, it's like...

      1. "I can write this article and put it on my site, then build backlinks."

      2. "Ah, sweet... three sales in a week."

      3. "How much mileage could I get out of this if I were to manually spin this article numerous times at the paragraph, sentence, and phrase/word-levels?"

      4. "What if I did that and then only targeted super low-hanging fruit keywords by the hundreds?"

      5. "Ooooh, and if that goes as well as I think it might, then I can create an info product about it."

      6. "Creating your own products is where the real money is at."

      7. "I'll need to make sure I'm building a buyer's list on the backend."

      8. "Hey, what was that really cool list-building strategy I learned?"

      9. "I need to load up my autoresponder with weekly content first."

      10. "To do that, I need some really high quality plr content."

      11. "That's what you need to focus on, Lee. Your plr store!"

      12. "That's like a hybrid between your own product and a service."

      13. "A service? Hmmm... Should I try to drum up ghostwriting clients? That's instant money."

      14. "Are there any other services I could offer that wouldn't take up so much time?"

      15. "What about all this fiverr arbitrage stuff? Where was that WSO I bought?"

      16. "Whoa, look at all these WSO's I haven't actually used!"

      17. "Come to think of it, what about ALL those IM courses I invested in?"

      18. "Okay, here's one on making 5-figures a month with Amazon. I get consistent commissions from them. Let me ramp this sucker up! Just stay focused!"

      19. "Wait, Amazon only pays once a month. I need more frequent payouts."

      20. "Market Health products. They pay every two weeks. The earning potential is huge. And there are no serial refunder issues to worry about."

      21. "Rrrrr... I feel like I'm scamming people by promoting these products. What if they don't actually work for folks? I don't want to be part of the problem, here."

      22. "Let's just kill it with Adsense! Nothing to sell. No skewed marketing angles. Just provide quality information and cash in."

      23. "Wait, they only pay once a month, too!"

... and there's about 419 more! They just seem to keep on going.

There are times when i'm faced with having to choose between several options. What i find helps is, to find the one that has the most reasons why i want to choose that option and those reasons, must be in sync with the greatest emotions attached to them.

Everyone is motivated by different things, so I'd suggest spending some time figuring out what motivates you, specifically. Pain and pleasure are the two primary motivators.

I'll tell you how I stay focused.

First, I got CLEAR on what I wanted.

Secondly, I then got CLEAR on how much money I would need to get what I wanted.

Thirdly, I WROTE down my goals.

Fourthly, I reviewed my goals daily, rarely skipping a day.

Fifthly, I put pictures up on my wall of the things I wanted to accomplish or have.

Sixthly, I put away the Television (not kidding, I didn't watch TV for a few years straight at one point).

Seventhly, I stopped hanging around people who didn't share my vision.

Eigthly, if you're "dabbling" then you're not running a serious business. It took me awhile to really understand this on an EMOTIONALLY level. So focus on ONE thing that's working for you and start growing it, scaling it up, etc. Once you've developed your focus where you can start and finish projects, then, and only then should you jump onto the next thing.

Here are 56 lessons I've learned over the past decade plus, I think it will really help point you in the right direction:

i use a notebook to write my goals and objectives down. It is much harder to get off the path when there is a clear path that is written down. Then I set aside 5 minutes every night to do a "self evaluation" and re-plan my next days work.

This 5 minutes keeps me "honest". I have to answer to myself for what I did or did not do today. I give myself a grade of 1-10 on how well I did that day. I don't spend to much time worrying about it, but in the back of mind, all day long, I know I am being graded.

    1. I'm unsubscribing from most of the lists. I hope to be able to clean my inbox this month. No matter how many great promotions I loose.

    2. I use to unsubscribe from all kind of social network notifications. I prefer to schedule a time for going social (and with a purpose).

    3. Objectives, objectives and objectives.

    3. I shouldn't be posting here ;-)

    Lee,

You're certainly not alone in that aspect. Plenty of people share that problem. It's easy to just advise someone to "stick with one method and ride it til' the wheels fall off" but sometimes it's easier said than done. It seems that you just need to find your motivation. For me, money isn't enough. I have tons of sticky notes on my desk and around my office filled with personal notes of how I'm feeling at times of inspiration.

Write down what it is that you want to get out of your business and motivate yourself to get there. It sounds trivial but it helps.

Hey guys there's some really great suggestions here! So thanks for that!

One thing that has worked very well for me is: accountability. Use something external to hold yourself accountable and to push you through.

This could be setting a date to launch a product, and telling everyone about it (email your list, put it up on facebook, tell you parents and friends etc), and yes you have to tell as many people as possible, because that's what creates the pressure on yourself! Doesn't work as well if you just set a date for yourself.

Another way is to find another internet marketer, and you both share with each other what your goals are and what you are going to achieve by when. Then you check up on each other. It's kind of like having a gym buddy.

Lastly, you could get a mentor, which I think is one of the best ways of staying focused. Good mentors are worth their weight in gold, and can save you a heck lot of time!

    Hope that's useful! =)

This is something I struggle with myself, so the suggestions above are great. It's interesting to see how different people handle the 'keeping focus' thing... what works for me is to multi-task. The more workload I have, the more pressure I feel and the more I work. Sounds weird, but it works for me.

I think the key is trying out different things and finding out what works best for you and your own individual lifestyle.

      Thanks again, friends.

Highly valuable tips you've shared. It seems to me that the common theme here is that "money isn't enough."

In a PowerTalk installment where Tony Robbins interviewed Wayne Dyer, I remember them saying something about "staying on purpose," or something to that effect.

Essentially, it means to focus on the greater good of your actions rather than your own personal gain. In other words, "how can I sincerely help people?" Perhaps that's where I've been lacking focus.

To completely level with you guys, I've been in desperation mode throughout literally the entirety of my IM career. The mediocre results I've gotten have been just enough to "keep my head in the game," but not enough to curb my extreme daily anxiety... at all.

Desperation mode has not served me well. Perhaps I need to focus on what kind of results I want to PROVIDE... rather than RECEIVE.

My other problem is i spend to much time on this forum trying to learn new tactics, problem is i already know it and how to do it. But when the browser for warrior forums close, i freeze and dont know where to start.

Heres to hoping i can regroup and start to focus on something in the new year !

How do you focus? You decide what EXACTLY you want to do and you do whatever it takes to do it, not allowing your mind to go anywhere else. As others have said, it's a skill that can be learned.

After receiving a couple invitations to do concerts, George Frideric Handel locked himself in his study and vowed he would not emerge until he had written... Handel's Messiah.

I have a laptop and desctop PC.

The laptop is strictly for work, not even skype installed there and everything is blocked that can distract me from working.
The PC is for everything else.

    Cheers,
    Yoangov

I schedule very specific times for specific activities, and
when time is up I move on to the next. I've actually used
    a digital timer for that.

I also get something working just the way that I want and
often hand it off to virtual assistants, so that I can spend
    time on Facebook and forums

To be focussed is not difficult when you need something desperately. Set higher targets with some materialistic goal..you need to be greedy in order to be hardworking or take work as your passion with a little bit of organization.

There's a saying that goes something like this: if you want to change your life, you've got to change a habit.

I think that applies to your problem, too. In fact I had the same problem staying focused. That's why I started to build a new habit - writing journal in the morning before I start working. I would not open my email box, or check my stats, etc. before writing my journal.

My journal helps me solve problems. For example, I would write: "I can focus if I ...". Complete this sentence and repeat it for 20 times each day. Continue for 2 weeks and you'll be changing your energy gradually. It works for me. I learn this technique from my business coach, Rich Schefren.

    Hope that helps!

I think the focus problem that all of us have to a certain extent can be solved with "self discipline".

If you look at almost ANYONE that is really good at something, including business, they had and have self discipline.

In order to have this, you have to KNOW what you WILL DO, and DO what you planned to DO DAILY. Then AVOID what DISTRACTS you from what you DO.

KNOW = What business should I be providing? How much do I want to make?

DO = What do I need to DO to get people to see what I have?

DO = Am I doing what I planned to do EVERYDAY to get exposure?

AVOID = Are you doing things that aren't in line with what you KNOW that you NEED to DO in your business? If so, you HAVE TO avoid these things.

    KNOW, DO, DO, and AVOID.

You can't do anything successfully without knowing what you want to do and you won't remain successful without DOING consistently and AVOIDING distractions.
