To different registrars, around 5 days. Transferring to another account on the same registrar should be the same day or instant.

Are you referring to transferring the domain name between registrars? Change ownership?
    Move to another hosting provider?

If you're transferring it out of a registrar to another one, it can take 1-7 days. If you just push it to someone else's account at the same registrar, it's instant.

When you transfer a domain you have to pay for 1yr reg. You can create a free account with most registers and then just do a free push which can be done easily in less than 24 hours.

It can take a week or so - it just depends on how awkward your current registrar wants to be about it. If you bought your domain and hosting as a bundle from a reseller, they can be very reluctant to part with it (in my experience) as they're kissing your business goodbye. Factor in the fact that a lot of people take time off in the run-up to Christmas and the registrar or reseller might be short staffed – or even closed if it's a one-man-band type of place – and you might not get it transferred this side of the New Year.

That said, if you're dealing with big name registrars it shouldn't take long at all. Earlier this year I transferred a .co.uk domain from GoDaddy to Heart Internet, and it took about 2 days.
