What to do if a .com/.nte and .org domains for your keyword is taken?

What advice would the fellow warrior give to someone looking at their keyword if the .com/.net/.org are taken?

For example, does any have any SEO research to show if any suffixes perform better from an SEO "juice" perspective. NOTE: All would be available in .com

For example say you keyword was weight loss. Which suffixes would be best and provide the most SEO benefit.

weightlossx
weightlosstips
weightlossinfo
weightlossssite
weightlossexposed
weightlossunleashed

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi mymoneymentor,

Well in this case I would try and be more specific in your keyword phrase. Usually the shortest, easyest to remember domain works best. If the ones you want ARE TAKEN, then use hyphenated or plural versions of your keywords. That has worked for me in the past. If all else fails, you can use one of the other extensions. The most important thing is that the keywords or keyword phrases are in the domain. Hope that helps.

In my experience it doesn't matter what the TLD is.
I find .info works as well as .com

Most people insist they would stick with the main TLDs...

I sure would go with the majority in this regard,

I would look to see if there was a .info available or .co.uk if I was targeting the UK. I don't think it matters what the tld is as far as ranking is concerned. Years ago it mattered because when people were looking for websites they would tend to type in .com but nowadays most of the traffic comes from other sources including search engines. Yes shorter domains are more memorable but again it depends where you are planning to get traffic from.

Out of your list I would personally go for weightlosstips because it looks a as if it's a search phrase that would be used by somebody looking to lose weight, but I would research that against other phrases.

      weightlossguide
      weightlossdiet
      weightlossadvice
      weightlosshelp
      weightlossaid

are others that I might consider but I personally wouldn't go for just adding an x and weightlosssite has too many s's for me.

If I absolutely can't find a tld for my keywords I would start looking to see how many searches there are for bestweightlosstips or bestweightlossguide I know that some on here will say that weightloss should be at the beginning but in some niches you do get a lot of searches for best - whatever

    Interesting question.

My guess is that nobody does, but let's hope I'm wrong?

What I can tell you for sure is that the additional letters/word need to be a suffix and not a prefix (but you knew this already).

    Good luck!

If .info is available, I grab it. Do the SEO and they rank as well as any domain. I've also taken the .co and ranked right at the top, but they are expensive and I don't like paying that for a domain.

If you do proper SEO, both onsite and offsite, you should do good with any TLD... now, which suffix to choose is somehow relative to person who is buying domain name, as some of them will also go with a number too... I don't have my favorite one... I would rather go ahead and do more keyword research to find good keyword for which domain name is available...

To answer your question in more details...

I have personally put up HUNDREDS of exact match domain sites
with different TLDs. From my experience the main .com, .org, .net
rank better (especially without SEO) than the others like .info, .biz, etc

And to answer which of the listed .coms I would choose if the main
is not available, I will go with the first - weightlossx.com

Apart from being more effective for SEO with just one letter off, it
can be brandable and easy to remember,

I have found also that .org and .net rank just the same as .com so try for one of those with a short or catchy suffix to match your specific niche or intent. I also heard the other day that someone was ranking really well with .co

I don't think TLD really hold any specific weight, but I prefer .COMs, .NETs and .ORGs as they are the most recognized by users.

Re using a suffix, there is no particular one which will help you or otherwise. I would suggest choosing something that makes sense and that is easy to remember. Things like what was suggested above: guide, help, advice, aid...

Choose something that your future readers will remember, and which is easily brandable. Think long-term!

Does nobody here read posts, any more, before replying to them

Guys, this thread isn't about "what domain extension would you want if the .com is taken?".

It's about "what suffix do you want to add to the intended name, before your .com extension?".

The clue is where the OP actually specifies expressly "All would be available in .com".

      I'm "just saying" ...

Personally, I'd look for a long tail keyword related to my main keyword and try using that for the domain name. A little fast and dirty keyword research should show you a nice long tail that is getting some traffic that might help you rank for that long tail in addition to your main keyword.

I've bought domains where I just threw a random letter on the end if I really wanted that keyword alone or if the long tail keyword was really long like... blahblahblahreview.com was taken, I've done blahblahblahrevieww.com.

And no, people don't read posts these days my ruffled feathered friend, but in their defense, the thread did sort of get hijacked a little bit Mob rules!
