Whats your thoughts on Windows 7

I currently used Vista 64 bit, but I'm sick of the constant administrator access pop-ups and crap.

Whats your thoughts on W7, will it be much better? Less warning pop-ups and crap?

What about running games and programs on it?

    Hi,

I actually have someone in my area using Vista...

(someone who is not computer-saavy at all)

and they said they have barely touched the computer
because it is so hard to figure out (Windows Vista)

Isn't Windows 7 the other name for Vista?

Either way, I'm sticking to XP Pro for now!

I am an IT Consultant, and I have not allowed any of my customers to upgrade to Vista. The fact that people are paying $99 to DOWNGRADE to XP on new computers should tell you everything you need to know about Vista. I won't bring any negativity into this - but - just say NO to Vista.

Windows 7, so far, looks like it is going to rock. I've only played with the beta briefly, but it seems very nice so far. The advice I'm giving my clients is, we're sticking with XP until we can get Windows7, and then we'll upgrade.

    HTH

    Cheers, Rich

I've been using Vista on most of my computers (I long ago turned off the User Account control warnings) with no problems whatsoever. I prefer it to XP and just recently put Windows 7 (completely different than Vista) on one of my machines and I like it but the only difference I notice is that so many of the processes are online based, which makes it smaller than Vista but for anyone not on broadband that will be an issue. Vista is huge because so many users said they wanted to be able to turn it on and go not having to install new software for each new toy they bought. Microsoft gave them what they asked for. And so many people don't take the time to turn off the warnings (which admittedly are there to save your a$$ in case of stupidity) then complain about ll the warnings popping up. If they bother yo, get rid of them, that's thebest thing about Vista, it can be fully personalized.
    OK, off my high horse.....

I tried the Windows 7 Beta. Put it this way, it's a slimmed down version of Windows Vista with the performance of Windows XP.

Despite all the promises made by analysts, the OS still begins with 33+ processes on boot and still consumes memory like it's limitless. It does have some compatibility problems with anti virus software, but that's expected for a beta.

Personally, I run Ubuntu (32bit) with Windows XP on my machine. I'd say to stick with XP as long as you can. Even Microsoft has extended the "end of life" of the software allegedly to the end of this month, but the market dictates their lifecycle, not them.

Not to critique too much, Windows 7 does add some much needed bit of flair to the user experience and does have a few nice utilities included. IE8 actually renders pages the way they are meant, unlike IE6 or IE7.

Any other thoughts you all might have?

I agree with your analysis, JVManna, but I bet several of those issues will be addressed when they release it. I really love XP but I think Windows7 will be palatable upgrade, much more so than Vista.

I'm using the 32 bit version on my 4 year old hp laptop running under virtualbox.

It's run perfectly fine and it's fast (compared to the vista computers I have used with much better specs than my laptop). It doesn't lag at all for me.

I haven't seen alot of administration popups yet, but I haven't actually installed a ton of software.

Personally, I haven't found a feature in windows 7 that I have to have over xp. All my stuff works perfect and smooth on xp, so I would have a hard time wanting to switch.

windows 7 is definately more stable than vista and it uses up much less resources (uses less RAM) to run.

However it is still in the BETA stage so I personally would suggest not to start using it immediately as it probably still has a couple of bugs here and there, especially if you are thinking about installing it on the machine you work regularly.

I'll wait for people to test it out and wait for all
the complaints in the world until about a few
months before trying out Windows 7.

When Vista was launched... tech savvy people
said that it was friggin' awesome. After a few
months, it's like KKK on Vista (remember
    Windows ME?)

So while people are saying it's better, I'll let the
majority of users (who are non-techy) help me
make the decision to take it up.

I haven't tried it, but I've heard nothing but good stuff thus far.

I'll be getting a new machine in a month or two. Thankfully I have a XP license I can transfer from the computer my son killed a couple of years ago.

I have been computing since the dos days. Experienced all versions of Windows. Purchased and installed Vista shortly after it's release. And promptly uninstalled a couple months later.

But last Feb something wonderful happened. And since that day, all of my responses to Windows questions have been...upgrade to a Mac.

    Take care
