Here's A Big Tip For Finding More "Offline" Clients

I was doing a little niche research last night and accidentally stumbled upon a site called MeetUp.com. I'd heard of the site before but never got around to checking it out til last night.

For those that don't know it's a central site for organizing offline meetings of all types, according to where you live. I searched a few cities in my area and couldn't believe the huge number of groups that meet on a regular basis. The groups are of all kinds, but a LOT of them appear to be business-related (local biz masterminds, etc).

So if you're looking to find more offline clients or network with local businesses, go to...

Use the Internet to get off the Internet! - Meetup.com

..and punch in your zip code. I'm sure you'll find tons of potential networking opportunities in your area!

Here's a couple of added tips:

      # 1: If you go to a business networking meeting it's best to go as the speaker.

You will do better by approaching have a dozen groups and seeing if they want an expert to speak on the secrets of using internet marketing in small business.

      # 2: One other option is to create your own business networking group (or cooperate with someone enthusiastic to create one).

Even if it's a small group you get first pick of people who join as potential clients for you.

If you joint venture with someone else like a printer (who can also benefit from running a group like this) you can do very well.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

I agree with Andrew's sentiment about going as the speaker, which was the point I was making about speaking instead of running around from meeting to meeting.

I think I will try putting a couple of different version of a few topics related to IM together and start getting out there on a local basis. (Gulp!)

          We'll see what happens.

I have used meetup for 2 years now and it can be a gold mine if used properly. I am running 3 groups and have a lot of members. Trick is - NEVER PITCH - NEVER SELL! Run fun events, happy hours, and information rich meetings and you will naturally get business. I also run a mastermind group through meetup, which is personally rewarding, as mastermind is a powerful method.

Try it out - people are so desparate to connect in our day of IMs, Mobile Tech, and social depravation. Face-to-face interaction is a pain that you can easily alleviate with meetup.com - no, I don't work for them!

I recently began using Meetup.com too and just went to my first meeting on Tuesday of last week.

It was quite a pleasant experience which was a nice surprise, especially as I've been very hesitant to start networking. I'm not sure how often I'll be gong to the meetings though as I really prefer to keep my business on a virtual basis (no face-to-face) as much as possible.

I'll definitely be exploring going as a speaker though. (I just don't want to fill up my schedule with the "busy work" of running from one meeting to another just for the sake of going to meetings.) MeetUp.com seems to be a good place to get in front of local business owners while honing your speaking skills, especially if you're just beginning to speak, like me.

I've found that Meetup is not quite what it looks like, for instance a group of 800 that I was a member of sometimes had 30 or so people actually show up to the meetings. It doesn't filter out the non-active members very easily. So, I might join a group, check out their board and say "Not my thing", yet I'm not removed anytime soon.

        Make sense?

Look into BNI chapters as well.

Its a very structured, referral focused professional networking organization and its very active. There are tons of chapters worldwide. You can go as a guest at all of them for $10 each - max 2-3 visits before they ask you to either join or scram

Typically you can scout out the existing members ONLINE to see which chapters have 10-20 peeps or more there, and if there is a website guru already in the mix. If there is - etiquette is - not to promote your services when its your turn to introduce yourself. Just your name and the name of your business. But you will get to shake hands and meet 20+ business owners, and get ALL their business cards. [ and then go home to their websites!] then your not a cold call anymore. If they are there - they are looking for more Referrals! Get there EARLY.

You could join BNI or keep in touch with the existing members you meet and volunteer to be their substitute if/when they need to miss a meeting - it happens A Lot. You then get to promote and discuss your business - like they all do for 60 seconds... and you usually get a nice breakfast or lunch for $10... and a business card of all their new guests.

        Meetings are weekly.

You'll also find it kinda easy to refer the different groups people as you get to know them. Using their services for stuff also goes a LONG way to getting you on the good guy list and referrals.

Sometimes the web guy they'll have in their group is whizbang flash geek who doesnt know the first thng about seo and or copy writing autoresponder messages - and would never have a gross un-flash POP-OVER Opt In Form clutter up his gorgeous Adobe Photoshopped imagery and Flash Intro!

Does nobody have a local library any more?
Does nobody have a local Chamber of Trade any more?

I find it amusing that internet marketers want to look for off line prospects on line.

I can't even fathom or understand networking in a library. CoC dinners and meetings are great, I couldn't agree more...but, a library? Am I missing something? Or is that an "old school" technique that you're about to "school" us youngsters on?

I agree, meetups are great. I just attended one this week for the first time. It was a Entrepreneurs Meetup, and it was great to network with like-minded people in a relaxed environment. And . . . I was invited to present at an upcoming SEO Meetup. Scary part is, I don't have a clue what I'm doing technically! But I figure I can always outsource :-) For now, I just needed to show up and make friends.

As far as Local Libraries go, they're a great place to go and offer to do a presentation for business owners. The library will advertise the meeting for you, and the attendees are very receptive.

If you give Business Owners basic IM marketing information, and throw in a few stats as to how effective online marketing is, they'll get it. They'll realize they don't have the time or the interest to do the marketing themselves, but they do have the need, so they need someone else to do it for them . . . and ta! da! - now you're helping them fill their need, instead of selling them.

It's just like we do online . . . give business owners your best information upfront. It helps to establish your credibility. And helps them to trust you. Once they trust you, they'll buy from you.

Simple as that. It really is that easy.

Libraries also keep lists of local groups and their meeting times. Not just business groups either, but "Special Interest Groups". A ready-made niche. They can often be easier to get a slot as a guest speaker.

I usually have a quick squizz at the folder for any new entries when I go in to renew my books.

I'm sorry I mentioned public libraries. Silly me - I thought everybody knew how to use them - there are far too many ways to try to enlighten you.

    Maybe it's an age, thing?

I've created a meetup about 2 years ago, had a local meeting and had three people show up with about 50 people who signed up. The meetup was centered around those wanting to become a millionaire.

So... I think I am going to take a second look and either 1) see if there are meetups around my area of expertise, or 2) start one around my area of expertise and see what happens.

As I remember, it doesn't take too much time to setup and get configured. Worth a shot!

    Thanks!
