$1 Million at $5 a Pop in 12 Days

I see a number of comments and opinions about people stealing someones hard earned product. And the problems with DRM.

Here is someone who did a test to see if (most/some) people are honest.

"It took 4 days for Louis to earn $200,000, and another 8 days to earn a whopping $1 million."

Louis CK Earns $1 Million in 12 Days With $5 Video

Most people don't have the background/preparation/reputation/etc. to do this, but it certainly shows that it can be done.

It may not be revolutionary in terms of internet marketing, but it is revolutionary in terms of distribution.

It is rare for an entertainer to distribute their work without the assistance of a middleman. These middle men jack up the price and take a hefty chunk of change. As Louis describes in his post they also interfere in the creative process. Using the power of internet marketing (and a list of followers) to bypass the middle man and still rake in some decent profit is very revolutionary.

His success in this experiment is very much acting as a pioneer into independent artists and performers becoming their own managers and distributors. This can lower costs, expand availability and open the doors for artists and performers that would not otherwise have a shot.

Opening the door to direct distribution through internet marketing does all of the things the internet promised to do! It takes the power out of the hands of a few industry 'heads' and puts it back in the hands of individuals.

      Let's see ... approximately 220000 sales

      43 open disputes at $5.00 each = 235.00
      28 requiring action at $5.00 each = $140.00

      43/220000 ~= 0.02%
      28/220000 ~= 0.01%

Doesn't sound like much of a problem to me.

Or put another way, this is the type of problem I'd like to have ... with that dollar volume .

He had 200,000 transactions. 48 disputes is something like .0003%. That's not too shabby.

EDIT: ooops, better math above this post.

Yep, same here, I pull the money out of my PayPal as soon as I get $500, $1,000 max... I wouldn't even think of keeping more than 10,000 in my PP...

OT: This is actually pretty crazy, although it has been mentioned that the reason why he was able to do this is because he had such a large fan base to market to.

I met and set up a JV last week with a musician who has already
sold millions of records, and sells his materials independently.

We are exploring ways to get his very diverse music into more
hands, and I took on the project partly because it fits in
perfectly with Brad Fallon's uQast, but also because thing
have finally evolved to the point where it's also very cost
effective to sell things at a lower price-point.

Before, processing charges made most smaller purchases
    cost-prohibitive.

Thanks for sharing the post, it may have made me a small
    fortune

He has a limited account, otherwise there wouldn't be the "view limits" link.
It is therefore unlikely he has $1MIL in his account.

Correct me if i am wrong.

Edit: There is also no activity on that account, except the last one which doesn't show yet.
If i had $1Mil in my paypal there would for sure be a HECK of activity going on and not only one single line. Now tell me this doesn't look "sketchy"?

I'm correcting you. The "View Limits" tab is on my account too. But if you click through, all it says is that my sending and withdrawal limits have been lifted.

I don't know if PayPal still has this because I haven't heard about it in a while. Didn't PP have a "micro-payment" account? It was set up for people who normally process less than $12 per average order. The commission equation was different and it charged a lower rate. That could have made a big difference in this account with 220,000 transactions. Every penny saved on the transactions would add $2200 to the profit.

The thing is this. Louis CK is at the height of his popularity. The same popularity that was afforded to him by the mainstream media after years of honing his craft. Radiohead had a very successful "pay what you want" album and Prince did an amazing amount of business selling his own music online and at shows. But all of these guys were already made by the machine.

CK said it cost $250,000 just to set up and produce this show. How many internet people have honed their craft to professional levels, learned their trade from every angle (such as producing, editing, directing, managing budgets andfinances and marketing), built up their reputations to the point where they have access to or can get bankrolled for $250,000. Go on the talk show circuit and leverage the internet and earn a million dollars in revenue? Not many. CK has been producing his own tv show for the last year so he knows the ins and outs of the business. It would be criminal for him not to do this to be honest. That being said, it's still an amazing feat. I just tend to be realistic about why it's even possible and what it means for the lowly artist at home trying to make it.

The machine is great at pushing you from the viral level to the national living room level and should be used as such, then this sort of thing should be a nice fat payday to recoup from years of the labels/agencies earning the lions share.

I think this feat can be duplicated by any well known celebrity these days thanks to social media. $5 is a price point that garners impulse purchasing. If you have a strong following, just give them a chance to give you $5. Mix in some viral marketing, limited time frame, add some curiosity and bingo...you'll make a lot of money too. If your following is big enough, a million bucks is not out of the picture.

I agree. Once it is shown that something is possible, it is a lot easier to do it.

One thing I find fascinating about what he did was that he actually took action on his idea and tested it. That is, to me, one of the BIG takeaways.

And he reaped some nice rewards !

Although it is cool to see C.K. do his thing, any no-name person is not going to be able to achieve these numbers. Of course, even a fraction of a million would be nice.

He's all over television promoting this. He had/has his own tv show. Not to mention, he's been around forever, and he's funny! Most celebrities could achieve these numbers, if not much higher, and it's starting to become more common as time goes on.

As IM'ers, everyone should know that if you have the list/fan base, you can sell a lot with the right product/advertising.

I was actually motivated to buy his show myself when I visited his site.

But only after I watched the preview video on the homepage, that masterfully gives you a preview of the quality you are getting.

That trick alone is marketing brilliance, and a good example of pre-selling good quality work. Without the video people who don't know this comedian wouldn't be motivated to buy it.

Not "everyone" is going crazy ... some people are actually using or adapting the idea for their own purposes. And that is the main reason I posted about it.

While kind of a nasty crack, some people prefer to talk or argue about something rather than put it into action. Less risky and much easier to do .
