Sex!

I am in the relationship niche, just working on my aweber follow-up campaigns for my list, and I am including a short article about 'the physical side of the relationship' - anyone know if it's ok to actually use the word 'SEX' in the article, potentially multiple times without it getting stuck in some spam filters? Do I need to use 'S-x' or 'S*x' instead?

    That seems to me a good alternative. It also depends on your text voice and image.

    If you come across as some badboy, you should use the word "sex" or something similar.
    If you come across as a gentleman/seducer the phrase you've mentioned would fit better.

    In case you use the word sex, maybe it should be better you go for the double opt in so they have to conform the subscription. This way you know for sure it won't end up in spam (I think).

    I think it's safe to assume the word will trigger spam filters in a big way. I can't help you as far as disguising the word though. Maybe s.e.x. would work.

      I've done as much as use a word like 'FREE'.

      Make sure you have rapport with the list, meaning, you answer replies that come and go, and you're not reported for SPAM after multiple mailings. That helps service like Gmail group your mail in with legitimate communication.

        You may be going about this all wrong for your niche or for any niche for that matter.

        Maybe you should do what a lot of marketers are doing now. Entice the reader with a small teaser that gets them to go to your site for the rest of the article and take the spam filters out of the equation.

        Something like...

        "For the latest on the more physical side of your relationships (things we can't quite talk about in an email) be sure to visit xyz.com..." or whatever

    The short answer is that yes, using a word like sex will not do you an favors as far as getting through the various spam filters.

    Having said that, its not at all impossible to use the words like "sex" or "free". several years back, those words actually hurt you more than they do now. spam filters are much better at recognizing real spam from normal emails that use those "forbidden" words.

    As far as using a variation of the word to "trick" the spam filters, forget about. Those tricky methods actually hurt you more now than anything.

    The truth is that getting emails through the various filters is not easy, and yes high profile "spammy" words are not going to help you cause.

    All members on the list (about 400) have done the double opt-in for aweber. I guess I'll maybe use sex a couple of times, and get creative with my euphamisms for the rest of the instances. So the wisdom is to avoid s.e.x. s-x, s*x etc?

    Hi Ralph - I guess I've always felt that people are more likely to read what's right there in front of them (and therefore eventually the offer) rather than having to decide "Do I click or not?". I send out a weekly newsletter, and a lot of the articles in it are just pasted from my website. So I think I'll try your idea out to see how it goes - especially with articles with tricky subject matters!

    if they have double opted in then i do think you should have a problem with using the word since they probably have added you to their contacts. but again the word you are using always triggers spam filter! lol

    Hi Chris,
    I recommend you use another word to just stir curiosity and use your email to send them to a blog post, it increase's your blog's seo as well as avoids the spam filters that way.
    Use your email to direct people to a blog, then use your descriptive words
    Hope this helps you to think a little different to avoid that spam trap.
    As an alternative you can go to Free Online Spam Test
    or other services and check your email before you send it.

    If you have to use the word in the article, I would suggest you paste the article on a blog and then link to the article from the email.

    I have no doubt that all the email services will mark it as spam so I think that's you best alternative.
