Help with Aged Domain

Hi Fellow Warriors,

Need your expert advise on the following:

I bought a aged domain with a relatively high PR. As I need to practically change everything, especially its content, how do I keep its PR while working on the amendments, and even after I'll have it indexed with the revised contents?

Do I need to let Google know that am the new owner of the said domain (this can be done via Google's indexing tools), or will it downgrade my PR if I do so?

Thank much in advance,
Nelin

If the content is changed, PageRank will change. PR is based largely on relevance of content. If the new site is the same subject as the old site, leave the old pages up or do permanent redirects to new pages with the same subjects.

Changing the content will slowly decrease the pagerank (because of the relevancy factor). But won't have any sudden effect. And you may submit your website once again through Webmaster tool.

If you have bought the complete web site with its content and all rights: no problem. In that case you should not change the content fast but. Leave it as it is and add more content on a regular basis. Then in a few months slowly start to change the old content.

If you just grabbed the domain and did not buy the content and have no rights to use it: too bad. Google will lower the PR to ZERO as soon as they find out about the change. If you now also change the content you increase your chances to wind up with a PR0 domain.

  • Hi Nelin,

Use SEO SpyGlass to gather details about the backlink profile of the domain you bought. Take note of the keywords used as anchors of the backlinks found on sites contextually relevant to your target niche, products/services/solutions, intended site content and keywords. Also take note of the content of the sites where those backlinks are found. Then, take note of the content with onpage PR that's posted under the domain you bought, particularly the keywords used for the content, the topics/sub topics discussed by each content page and the content type found on each page (videos, graphics/images, written content). Use the details you gathered to build the new content of your site...

    Hope this helps...

    Forget about PR.

You should be more concerned about other SEO attributes (search placements, backlinks, history, etc)

All valuable inputs; much appreciated, Everyone!

Other IM school of thoughts recommend getting aged domain with good PR standing as a way to avoid the Panda. But the challenge is how to "preserve" the PR of that domain, while integrating your own changes to the site, or even overhauling the whole site.

Now I understand better, and am getting a clearer picture of how it works, notwithstanding the importance of basic SEO strategies.

A good learning curve for me.

      Thanks again!

Best awnser here! So many people seem to think its about PR, while its not.
PR can easily be gained. History cannot..

Reconstruct the old site structure via archive .org and 301 the old pages to your new content to keep the juice of the old backlinks flowing right into your site.

        Thanks, pzelf!

What should be the best approach if the old site's contents are completely different from the one I'm intending to transform it into? Can I still do as you've suggested, ie, "reconstruct the old site structure via archive .org and 301 the old pages to my new content to keep the juice of the old backlinks flowing right into my site"?

Agree! Here's from my personal experience; if you're more concern about PR, you won't go too far.

PR is mainly determined in the amount of backlinks and the quality and relevancy of them, if you completely change the content then the PR might go down because the relevant backlinks will no longer be relevant.

If your goal is to rank for different keywords than you are ranking for now, the PR of the site is irrelevant. If it goes to zero, it doesn't make much difference if you are doing the SEO to rank for the keywords that you are targeting. PR doesn't mean much anymore. Ranking for your keywords does.

Sorry, that's is simply incorrect. Page Rank is a mathamatical algorythm of incoming and outgoing links (plus some adjustments). Relevency is not a factor in Page rank.

Above is the advice you should be taking.

Search ranking (how high a keyword appears in the search results) is your goal. Relevency of backlink anchor text and source site content is likely to make your keywords rank higher. The PR of the link source may also increase your "link juice".
The PR of your own site will not have a huge effect on your own keyword rankings.

An aged domain is likely to be an SEO advantage both for search ranking and stability. The backlinks it has may also help if you have the same page name (urls) for the original backlinks to point to.

If these pages contain different (non relevent) content to original then the seo advantage (search rankings) will be less.
