Does Anyone Run a News Based Site?

I wondered if anyone was running a news based site with any success and how you drive traffic to it.

It seems that up to date information runs too quickly to start focussing on keywords and writing articles with backlinks to them so what's the best traffic generation techniques for sites like this?

My site is a games based site and whilst I'm not trying to make millions from it I think I would enjoy some sort of income. Currently my traffic covers my hosting costs but it would be great to earn enough to buy more games/hardware for testing.

One of my techniques included picking keyphrases and writing another article using the keyphrase in the title which seemed to work well until the Google search encryption. It's not as effective now, but does generate some traffic.

Other techniques such as blog commenting and forum posting seem to be ok.

Anyway, thanks and hope you guys had a good Christmas. Hopefully some of you are generating good traffic from news based sites and can help me a bit.

You should, if you haven't already, get your website enlisted in Google's News Feed. If you publish good content and you approach Google News the right way you should have no problem getting accepted.

This can increase your traffic a lot. Checkout E. Brian Rose here on the Warrior Forum. I'm pretty sure he was the first person here to have a course on this subject. He has a good website, Google Red Carpet, that does a great job of explaining how a person can profit from Google News.

I don't think it is all that hard to build lots of traffic to a news website and profit from Amazon, Adsense, and Media Sales (e.g. BuySellAds.com). Targeting the right keywords and keeping tabs on the most popular topics in your niche everyday is crucial.

I'd divide the site on different categories and try not to be too general with your article titles. Anyway, you don't need to write only about news. You can do some reviews and guides also.

Gaming niche is really competitive. So you'll need either a lot of content or a new approach.
