Need help starting up from Australians

Hello everyone,

I am very keen on getting into making money online but kind of worried and unsure about how to actually set up. I have spent the last few hours reading about affiliate marketing and other strategies but haven't come across actually setting up the financial side.

What is the process?

e.g.:

- Do I get an ABN or ACN? Does it benefit me to pay $400 and register as a company?
- Do I set up a new account at the bank for this? Is it a special account or just another account under my name?
- What do I do about tax?
- Are the any legal dramas I need to worry about?
- Is there anything else I need to think/worry about before starting up?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

At this stage, I wouldn't bother about a company or an abn. wait and see if you make some money first.

If you make sales in Au then you'll have to charge gst... but if u make less than $75k per year then i think you're exempt.

all my sales are usd so no gst applies.

    cheers.

You are right. You don't need to collect GST if you earn under $75k.
A company is not needed unless you plan on being BIG but you don't have to decide that now.
I am an Australian. I have been working online for a couple of years. I do have an ABN but I don't actually need to use it. I had it from a prior job.
Ask if you have other questions.

      Hi, and welcome to WF

I agree, you don't need a company name at this stage. But, since I am no expert, I would suggest asking your accountant/solicitor how that will affect you if you do go BIG down the track, or have any problems.

You can use Paypal to accept/make payments (almost everybody uses it online). You will have to read their terms of service properly though, as (for instance) you can't use a personal account if you are a business.

Search in google for 'paypal site:warriorforum.com' (without quotation marks) and narrow your search down to the last 6-12 months. You will find a lot of WF threads that will inform you of the do's and don'ts of paypal, plus other payment options.

Personally I went straight for an ABN and registered a business name, so that I could open a Paypal business account. One of the benefits of this is that you can trade under a business name vs handing over your personal details online. If you are happy trading under your name you can just use a 'premier' paypal account.

By the time I am earning 75k I hope to have switched to a 'real' merchant account, and keep my paypal use to a minimum. I wouldn't trust them with large sums (or in the IM niche), but they are handy in the beginning stages providing you adhere to their terms-of-service.

As far as legal stuff, the only thing that comes to mind right now is not to make wild and unrealistic claims re your product. Also you will need a clear refund policy etc, and will need to honor it. Mostly commonsense stuff, but again I am no expert.

Contact me anytime if you need a hand (thru my profile or my 'homepage') I am fairly new too, and have only just dealt with much of this myself

Hi Elemenopee, I come from Melbourne as well, as quite a few others do, and l have some advise.

As others have said, getting an ABN, isn't really necessary in the beginning, although if you want to become an affiliate for Hostgator, (popular web host) you may need one?

But overall it isn't usually necessary. I am half way through a business course myself, and l did need an ABN for that one, but bringing money in is more important.

I wouldn't fuss about a business account either, unless you intend to pay people through checks, which isn't necessary for purely online business.

If you are creating your own physical product, and don't have a credit card, possibly but you would need to look into it?

I have been online for about 4 years, and have tried many things! Most of it didn't work, or hasn't worked yet. But one area has, and that is the area l am putting all my energy into.

SEO business is high risk, in my opinion, and regardless of the method involved, the same pattern resides; work very hard for a few months and hopefully your website, etc will start making good money. Or it could take years??? About 10% of people who try SEO type business make it profitable, but most don't.

There are some others, but the area that is working for me is, creating my own products based on what the market wants and selling that. I do have the advantage of being able to produce my own high quality graphics, but that can be outsourced.

When Gurus say that creating your own product is the best way to make money, they are not lying. My first product is selling, but probably at a price point that doesn't get over advertising costs, (Bing advertising) so l am creating a few more products to add to the main one as bonuses. That should allow me to make a profit and attract affiliates, (you need a price point of at least $37 on Clickbank to attract affiliates).

You should set up a Legal page, disclaimer as well just take a look at some products of Clickbank to get some ideas. Although the business course l am doing requires Liability insurance, which is at least $67 a month, mainstream insurers, AAMI, RACV, won't touch you if you are selling your own or someones else s product online.

But putting up a Legal, etc page should be enough!

I would set up a Clickbank account as it initially costs about $50 then it is free, although costs are taken out depending on sales, etc. And affiliate sales are automatic.

PayPal is good as well, but manually paying your affiliates or manually processing orders, can become a pain, and could cost you sales. Someone in the US may order your product and not realizing that the order needs to be manually processed in AU, a few hours later they will probably cancel the order, then you will have to go through contacting PayPal, to get the funds sent back to them or sent your way. I have been through that, so unless it is a launch, stay with Clickbank.

I would also avoid Google Adwords, especially if it is making money online. Odds on you will get banned for life if you sell something like that.

And l have heard that solar panel, wind turbine type affiliate offers are high converters, but avoid Earth4Energy. They do convert at 2%, but Google won't allow their site to be directly advertised on their search engine, as they have violated their TOS. But there are similar products out there you could try out.

It is also a good idea to build a list, (another good reason to create your own product) for a recurring income. Awebar is one of the best!

Well l have shared a few gems with you, which should save you some failures, and l wish you all the best.

        Shane

          Hi and welcome!

As the posters before me have said, don't worry about tax or ABN's yet. I have a business account at paypal, but you don't need one at the begining. I also talk over my tax with my accountant as I include my internet marketing income.

I would say just keep a record of what you spend and what you earn.
just use a bank account in your own name while you're starting out.

On your websites its a good idea to include a privacy policy and a disclaimer, and a disclaimer on any information products you create.

My best advice would be to try an avoid buying up all the great offers and feeling overloaded with information. Maybe join a coaching group and focus on learning about differnt strategies, they come up regularly in the wso section.

all the best with your internet marketing ventures!

    Hi elemenopee,

Welcome to the Warrior Forum! It was around this time last year I started here and I've learned so much. Being part of this community is extremely valuable when you want to make it in Internet Marketing (IMO).

I know how confusing it is at the start of something unconventional (career wise) as Online Marketing.

As for business requirements, I have found a Paypal Premier account to be sufficient.

But there was a good suggestion above regarding when you might find the need to have an ABN. In my opinion, you wont need one when you're JUST starting. Establish yourself. Find what works best for you and then worry about that.

I also make sure that every single one of my websites have Disclaimer, Privacy Policy and Contact Us pages (especially important if you're in Affiliate Marketing & sell your own digital products)

As for taxes, Im not sure what the amount is right now but I think about $20,000+/yr and you will be taxed. When you make a considerable income, it is definitely time to check properly. Also your second job is always taxed at a higher rate.

When it comes to anything legal, its always best to speak to the right authority. Contact ATO - Australian Taxation Office Homepage and probably best to have a chat with a tax accountant to put your mind at ease. We can only give you friendly/personal advice but make sure you do your own research too.

Just PM if you need help. I know how overwhelming it can all be. Anyway, wish you the best in your online endeavors.

I have an ABN and also a registered business name. The ABN costs nothing to register and is not hard to get so I would consider it if I were you. That way, even if you don't make any money in the first year, you can still claim all your expenses so that when you do finally start making a profit, those expenses will be taken out of your taxable income. Your profit or loss will carry over from year to year so you can carry over all your expenses until you start making a profit.
