Thaddaeus T. Hogg, The Hillbilly Marketer

Hi everyone! I am going to take the Thaddaeus T Hogg alias up a notch in 2012. It seems to be very popular and people gravitate to ole Thad really well!

Here is my hesitation! There are some people who are offended when you make fun of "hillbillys" and I certainly don't want to offend anyone. Having said that, it is very hard NOT to offend some people nowadays.

I have never intended to make fun of hillbillies; in fact, even though I was born and raised in Texas, a lot of relatives on my dads side came from Tennessee and Kentucky and have been known to dabble in the shine a little bit, if you know what I mean.

The whole purpose of the Hillbilly Marketer has been to bring a little humor into people's lives. I haven't tried to monetize it in any way up to this point and I'm not sure that I will (but I might if I came up with a really good idea).

So, I wonder if I should stop using the hillbillymarketer.com domain and switch to stumpwoodyholler.com and thaddaeusthogg.com domains? Thad can still use the "hillbilly" persona without directly mentioning hillbillies.

Also, I would love to hear any ideas you might have on ways to use the "Thad" persona! My original idea was to turn Stumpwoody Holler into something like Garrison Kellior's Lake Woebegone with regular characters and stories about them. I would love to hear your ideas!

Oh and by the way, I have been asked time and time again where I came up with the idea of Thad. I'm not sure if a lot of you remember him but the inspiration for Thad was Jerry Clower. I LOVED his humor and I patterned Thad after his stories!

Okay, thanks for any feedback you might have and you have a great whatever it is wherever you are!

There are some people who are offended by just about anything, Chris. If you don't do things just out of fear that someone will be upset, you'd never get anything done.

I think you should stick to the hillbillymarketer domain as you are known for that even more than Thad's "real" name.

    Hi Chris,

I like the idea of using StumpWoodyHoller.com. It's catchy.

Besides, I'd follow ol' Thad right into burninghotdesertwithoutwater.com just so that I can get some of that bottled laughter he always dishes out

As a Redneck Marketer, I don't understand the problem.

Mind you, I am not personally much of a redneck, but I was born into a whole family of them.

The people who call me a redneck have never met my wife. She makes me look like a Yankee.

Of course Sam England is a redneck for shore, so him being my partner in Redneck Marketers fits him to the tee.

I don't think it is a bad thing if you are not demeaning hillbillies to sell products and services.

I don't believe that what Sam and I do is demeaning to rednecks. I believe it celebrates what it means to be a redneck.

I'm delighted to hear it ... he's one of my favourite (and best) Warriors.

No ... but is this a theoretical question because you're being super-cautious, or has ol' Thad actually offended anyone here (surely not?). I mean, you'd have to be looking really hard for something to be offended by, wouldn't you?

Will give it some thought and get back to you ... but meanwhile, put me down among those who'd be very pleased indeed to see ol' Thad playing a more active role here.

Chris, I don't see that you are demeaning hillbillies. I see it as more like what Jeff Foxworthy does with rednecks - it's a type of celebration.

If people are of a mind to be offended, ain't nothin' you can do to stop'em. :p

By the way, when you see Thad, tell him he still owes me a jug for the dynam... er, fishing bait, yeah, fishing bait, I loaned him the other day...

Well, my two fellow internet marketing buddies Mike and Jason both come from small, rural towns from two different states (West Virginia and Alabama, respectively) and they both think you're great and neither of them are offended. I've never seen you (or Thad) write anything that would be offensive. Then again, you're talking about PEOPLE here.

There are just some people out there that seem to find something to be offended about. I actually had someone go to one of my dating websites (for men) and told me they were offended that I had two beautiful women on my websites and then began listing a myriad of reasons on how I was objectifying women. Sheesh!

Two thumbs up from the Cortez corner.

Actually, I have had several people in this forum who were mildly offended by Thad. They considered themselves hillbillies and they felt I was portraying them as stupid which was NOT my intention. I have also researched hillbilly type sites on the net and I have seen a few people complaining about the same thing.

There are actually two sides to this. I DON'T want to hurt anyone's feelings but on the other hand, there are some people who just want to be critical and complain. From a marketing standpoint, Allen Says will be the first to tell you that controversy brings eyeballs and that is a good thing.

One of the things that I plan to change are the grammatical errors in the writing. A lot of people have told me that it was hard to read and that is counterproductive to what I am trying to do. I am pretty sure I can keep the tone of the writing the same and be grammatically correct (at least to make it a little easier to read).

By the way, when you see Thad, tell him he still owes me a jug for the dynam... er, fishing bait, yeah, fishing bait, I loaned him the other day...
Why John, I can't EVEN begin to imagine what you are talking about!!!

Here is another idea I had. I have thought about having other people play characters on a blog type model for Stumpwoody.com and make posts of their own! They would have to be talented writers with a flair for the "lingo" but I think it might work well!

I have heard the other Stumpwoody Hollar folks talking about this...

And although I think it would be fun, it is not something that would draw a lot of my time, as the anonymous nature of the whole thing would steal away the incentive for participating.

Here's some quotes from two of the most successful
marketers ever about the area of offending...

"Your marketing should be loved and hated, but
    never tolerated."
    Jay Abraham

"You can only attract to the degree that you're
    willing to repel."
    Dan Kennedy

If you want to attract a market who respond to the
HillBilly persona, then don't worry too much about
those who don't like it (if they're not in your target
market and you're not being a total jerk).

If you tone down your marketing to try to please
everyone, you'll loose the edge and distinctiveness
that attracts the people you DO want.

Effective marketing POLARIZES people into believers
and non-believers and that's what your HillBilly persona
    does.

You'll never please everyone and it's useless to even
    try to do so.

By the way, the ThaddaeusTHogg domain is harder
to spell (for HillBillys and non-HillBillys alike).

    Good luck.

    Dedicated to mutual success,

    Shaun

WHAT?! Thaddeus isn't real, just an alias? And this two days after Santa didn't bring me anything for Christmas. You may now label me a complete cynic.

Anyways, I see nothing wrong with the persona or the domain name that you use. The only complaint I would have is that Thaddeus does not post more often.

Yep, reminded me of the time when I was just a pup and my grandpa took me fishing. I was chattering away, and I guess I wore him out.

He told me that if I really wanted to catch a bunch of fish, I had to pay attention and hold my mouth just right.

I asked him how to hold my mouth so I could catch a bunch of fish...

It's not common, but there are a bunch of people who believe the fishing and hunting seasons run from 'freezer empty' to 'freezer full'...

A local game warden had been trying to nail one of these poachers for years, but always seemed to be one step behind.

One day, he spied the poacher's old pickup truck on the shoulder of a dirt road near a small pond. Sneaking in, he saw the old poacher loading a suspicious box into his old duckboat, huffing and puffing on a cheap cigar.

Just as he pushed off the bank, the warden jumped aboard and informed the poacher he was under arrest.

The poacher told the warden he couldn't be arrested for something the game warden was also guilty of. The warden insisted that he would never do such a thing.

The poacher reached into the box, took out a stick of dynamite, touched the fuse to the cigar and lobbed it to the warden.

"Well, warden, you gonna talk or are you gonna fish...?"

    I like Thad being around.

He always seems to give good advice which is very important. As long as the advice is solid, I enjoy the extra shot of humor in my daily WF readings.

A good laugh is never a bad thing.

The only issue I have is one you already alluded to and mention you would be working on which is that sometimes the dialect is hard to read to the point where it is distracting.

    Keep it up.

At my last job, I was the asst mgr at an electronics store. At another location in my home town, the store manager was an older black fellow.

One year at Christmas, I learned that he and I were related in a hillbilly kind of way.

It is a funny story really... In a redneck / hillbilly kind of way...

So, my wife's sister who was living with her lesbian girlfriend had gotten pregnant at one point.

She and her lesbian girlfriend were raising my niece in a two-mom home.

I was informed over the Christmas holiday that the father of my niece was the nephew of the store manager, whom I spoke with on the phone almost daily.

I'd tell you also about my ex-girlfriend, but that story would confuse you even more.

                      She was from Arkansas.

lol, I was just proving the point of "offending" people with the PS. See? it worked. you already know I've used that one "article marketing is dumb" a bunch of times to offend people here and get a rise out of folks.

funny thing is I really dont have a problem with article marketing... I just know people get upset here when I trash it. So, I do. [/evil]

I don't get mad about such things anymore...

Especially when I realize that someone is doing what you do...

If fact, I have began to do the same thing myself, and there is only one person to blame for me being that way... YOU!!!

                    Hi Chris,

I am going to take the Thaddaeus T Hogg alias up a notch in 2012. It seems to be very popular and people gravitate to ole Thad really well!

Here is my hesitation! There are some people who are offended when you make fun of "hillbillys" and I certainly don't want to offend anyone. Having said that, it is very hard NOT to offend some people nowadays.
That's nothing, I once offended someone by mentioning that I get them mixed up with Thaddaeus when I see either of them posting on the forum...

Why, I would have thought they would have taken that as a compliment but I guess there is no accounting for taste! Now if you had told them they LOOK like Thad, well...

Keep doing what you're doing! One of the first websites my wife and I ever built featured an anti-PETA redneck named Enid Furmeister. It was huge. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Thanks again folks and ya'll come on back now, hear?

People are offended by everything these days. Forget about 'em. I like the hillbilly angle. Sometimes IM can feel so stuffy. If you need any banjo music for videos I may be able to help you out with that.

I don't see how you can do ANYTHING without offending somebody. And I think it's obvious that Thaddaeus has no ill will toward anyone.

Both of my parents were born in Nigeria, so growing up, people would use the movie Coming to America to make fun of me. That movie was the most unrealistic representation of Africa that I've ever seen, but guess what......It was and is HILARIOUS.
