Which host is lenient with mass mailers like phpList?

Hi Warriors,

I heard that HostGator has a limit of 500 emails sent per day. Is that true?

Do you then know of any reputable hosts that doesn't quite have a limit as I want to run phpList with a list of 50,000 emails.

Appreciate any assistance I can get.

Cheers.

Pretty much none of them will allow that.
You would need to get your own server.

I don't know of a host that would be lenient to mass mailing.

Even if the hosting company itself is trying to help you out, they can run into problems with their upstream provider.

Are these opt-ins, did you purchase this list, etc....?

Most hosting companies today monitor items like this closely. Some providers outside the US are a little more open minded.

If you find a host that let's you send that kind of email out on
a shared server, then you probably found a host who could care
      less about his clients.

Two things that host's keep a close eye on and they are email
and MySQL or other database usage. These are two resources
that can bring a server to it's knee's.

Your best bet is to lease an inexpensive VPS (Virtual Private Server)
from a good service like Servint, Liquid Web or Powervps.

You can then set it up any which way you want.

    lol

You've absolutely no chance, best way to get your account nixed.

If you must send that amount of emails out, then you'll need your own server and unless you own it, I would imagine permission from whom your renting from.

All sound advice. Aside from other possible problems, sending 50,000 emails from a shared hosting account can severely degrade server performance for everyone that's sharing it.

    Thanks all ...

With that said and by the same token, would staggering (scheduling) the emails being sent out help server performance to the point it does not become a problem then?

    Cheers!

That would help, yes, but your host still might not approve of it if they find you're sending that many emails. You also run the risk of spam complaints causing your hosting to be shut down. The larger the list, the larger the risk of that.

That's the first question that popped into my head, but you said they capped you at 500/day, so with staggering, you still have a daily cap.

Are you sure about the cap of 500/day? Did you hear that, or verified it? (Of course usually asking them, they may tell you something false, like, "no, it's 200".. They don't want "spammers".)

If you are going to mail to an opt-in list (I'm assuming these are opt-ins), you should go with at least some VPS setup where you are guaranteed a certain amount of resources. (As mentioned above, sending on a shared host account will suck certain resources from others. This may be why they also have a cap (if they do)).

I use the program to send out 3k to 4k emails in a batch. I schedule them at 5 then 30 sec delay then 5 and they all appear to get delivered.

Takes a while but its automatic and runs in the background.

I run it on a shared server.

      Hi winebuddy,

What do you mean by "schedule them at 5 then 30 sec delay then 5"? What's the total list size you're sending to on your shared server then?

      Cheers.

I've been using Thirdsphere for years. They are VERY marketer friendly. I use Autoresponseplus with them and never had a problem at all.

No host will allow that kind of mailing. Comcast will allow a max of 2000 per day.

As far as sending out a small batch of 5 or 30 at a time, it sounds like you are using the old Aureate Mailer. I have bad news for you if you are using this system. All your mail is not going out.

I use phpmail and it works AOK. We promote classes for our school and fill them up using this application.

We use a shared server but stagger the emails.

get a dedicated server, preferably in the UK or Canada.

YOU WILL burn out that IP (get it blacklisted)

Be sure to ahve a different site/domain sending than the one you are marketing.

People complain about spam for the littlest thing..like FORGETTING they signed up with you.

doing things like making sure you have opt-out and following full CAN-SPAM procedures ensures you can send as much mail as you want for as long as you want.

Third Sphere has always been a good host for AutoResponse Plus and (I guess) other mailers.

As Michael said, they are marketer friendly. Not only that, they actually understand the ins and outs of managing their servers for fast and efficient delivery of email. They also offer dedicated servers when you outgrow their shared service.

The last time I checked, they allowed you to send 20,000 emails per day on their shared plan.

      Cheers,

I just asked Dreamhost about this very thing the other day as I WAS looking at using PHPList (until I learned some other things and will now no longer be using it on my live site).

They allow you to as long as the volume is not insane and as long as your lists are double-opt in and they can access a log to verify which they said PHPList does.

Your best bet is to email them, be very clear about what you intend to do (do not lie, they WILL catch you), and then ask if they allow it and what they require. If they say no, use something like GetResponse or Aweber.

hmm, would there be any limitations (per hour) if one went with a dedicated server instead?

No, a dedicated server is yours. Of course if somehow you were doing bogus mail stuff with your dedicated server, your hosting company that you are leasing the dedicated server from could shut you down, but basically a dedicated server, it's your show.

I use dedicated and shared depending on my needs for list stuff.

(And as mentioned above, if you don't mind throttling, there are options.)

Hostgator allows you to end up to 500 emails per hour in one shot, but using mailing list software like PHPlist you can throttle your lists to stay within that cap. I've done so and frequently send emails to list of 5000+ subscribers without issue using Hostgator. You just have to make sure to throttle!

      Hi Comenius,

What are the throttling settings (and the other settings) you use with PHPlist?

As mentioned above get a VPS plan. You'll be able to set up your own mail server and it costs much less than a dedicated server. Here's a list of some good value managed vps hosting plans.
