What if your free report is mostly from your blog entries?

Just wondering about this.

I am in the middle of writing my free report. Somehow I actually enjoy blogging more than writing the report, so much so I have actually expanded some of the chapters of my report into new blog entries.

What do you guys think of this? Is it alright to have a report where the content of it is from the blog itself? Or would that make it very repetitive (though I understand the goal of a report anyway is to capture leads and build a list).

It really depends. I did put together a free report with blog posts, but my blog is old and very few readers get to see the posts I used for the report.

So my suggestion is to decide whether or not to create the report with blog posts based on how many people actually get to see those posts you are using. If many get to see them, then don't use them.

So you basically used yours to get people to read your posts?

I think what Frankie is saying is that if you're recycling old blog posts into a free report for newer visitors who probably won't see those older entries, you'll be fine. But if the content is fresh on your blog at the same time you're giving visitors to your blog a free report that contains the same content, it probably won't go over well.

This is exactly what I meant. Thanks, Jon!

It's a smart use of your own material. Don't assume people have read all your posts. Info marketers do this all the time.

I knew an author who, when he wrote a book he first published each chapter as a special report that sold for $10. This was just before the Web took off so the reports were physical, paper booklets.

Then when the actual book came out he had a mailing list from the special reports he'd sold and made a special offer to his list to buy the book. No one ever complained.

Recycle as much of your material as you can.

    This is the operative bit.

Basically, you give people a free report to get them on your list, and there's an online blog you want them to visit which has even more information on it.

If this was a report you were selling, I would get all stern and complain about it, but as a free report... I think it's sensible. In fact, I think your report should contain links to the expanded blog posts. This makes your free report into what amounts to the introduction for your blog, which is terribly clever. I like it.

    Thanks guys!

I guess for me my main qualm would be whether people who enjoy reading the report. If originality wasn't in it, I thought it would be crappy.

    Its totally cool man,

In fact, you're doing your subscribers a big favor, because now ...they wont have to shift through all of your blog posts just to find the ones they were looking for.

Now they are all in one place.

As far as morally, I dont see an issue with this either, you are simply providing unique and original content that your readers/subscribers will really enjoy and benefit from. Plus its your, you own and can to whatever the heck you want wit it.

Since it is a free report, that is no problem at all in my opinion. If it were paid or dubbed new/original content, then maybe.
